so yeah, today i was doing my deadlifts and i got into my last set with my heaviest weight yet and my body picked it up well but halfway through the set, it almost completely slipped out of my hands. i usually strain a little to keep it in my hands but i never actually drop or almost drop it till today. so any advice if what i should do to help this? maybe straps? or work forarms more? thanks

Straps will help but they will become a crutch. The best thing would be to increase your grip strength. A towel or some chalk might come in handy also to keep your hands dry. Good luck - Mike

If you are losing your grip then you need to strengthen your grip. Leave the straps at home. I truely feel your grip determines how much weight you can handle safely. Train your grip to hold more. Straps take away a great opportunity to work your grip.

LOL this is a muchly debated topic! I agree to a point that grip training is needed (me included!). However I know that I can hit all but the last set or two of my Shrugs and deadlifts. My grip is just plain tired and my palms are sore. I use chalk and have made some improvement. But I know that if the grip fails at 315 for my deadlifts, my back is still ready for 1-2 sets....so I use straps. But I train my grip hard all the time and plan to use them less and less. but my point is that they are a crutch if you let them be one. You can use them and still train safely and hard....

Are you using a reverse grip or a double overhand grip?

I say after 4 or 5 reps and the grip goes, then use straps. Next set do 2 or 3 reps or till the grip fails again, then try the straps again and get one or two more reps.

When in your workout are you people deadlifting? I either use it as my first lift on my max effort day or as my second lift on speed day. If your grip is failing then it is a weakness. Weaknesses need to be fixed with hard work not band aid. And straps are the band aid not the fix. Do low reps higher weight. Give yourself a few minutes between sets. Develop the grip. Also, when in the week do you deadlift. I work my grip strength the day after deadlifting and always let my grip strength recover completely before my next deadlift workout. I have never failed because of grip. I'm not special, I just work hard and smart. I train my athletes like this and their grip does not fail either.

How many of you train with pull ups? Great back exercise. Also a great grip exercise. Here is my back workout the day after my deadlift workout:

Pull-ups
75 x 5 x 3
2 min TBS

Shrugs
465 x 5 x 3

Bent Over Rows
225 x 4 x 3
2 min TBS

Seated Rows
290 x 4 x 3
2 min TBS

Pull-downs
300 x 4 x 3
2 min TBS

I superset these back exercises with trunk exercises. If you try this workout you will notice how bad your forearms are burning when you're done. It is a non-stop grip workout. Some days I will try to hold my last set of shrug for a full minute before putting it back on the rack. I do bar hangs for as long as possible. I have held onto a pull-up bar for 3.5 minutes at a BW of 270. I use the squeeze grip trainers until my forearms are screaming at me. I do multiple sets of forearm curls. I hold 44 lb olympic plates in each hand by pinching them between my thumb and 4 fingers until it slips out of my hand. Deadlifting is static grip strength. So you need to train your staticly. This is how you train grip. It is not easy and it does not happen over night. If you ever want to be a successful powerlifter then you need to leave the straps at home.

straps are badn aids? LOL that was funny. Straps can hurt yes but they can help. I use them and my grip is always improving as I work it as well. Bottom line is do what youwant to do. I work deadlifts on day 2 last exercise.

Is your goal to become a better deadlifter? If it is why wouldn't you train it first. You can handle more weight and that is how to get stronger faster.

Yeah i want my deadlift better...but I can not train other back exercises after deadlifts....nothing left in me....I have been making some good progress the last few years this way. I do not have the time to train other than one body part per day 5 days a week.

Would you like me to set up a plan that you can train over 5 days yet get everything twice per week? I use to be the same way Mutt. I was bull headed and wouldn't listen to anyone. My lifts stalled. A great thing happened to me though. I got hired as an intern at the University of Richmond and began training with Jim Roney (elite powerlifter). We clashed on every thing I did in my training and finally I told him I would give him 4 weeks. I lifted with him and saw immediate success and am now chugging along. I am fairly injury free and am always gaining. I can help you if you want me to. Drop me a line at: certifiedweighttrainer@yahoo.com so I can forward you a word document.

Yeah I would take whatever advice as I am always learning. I would love to hit 650 with out straps etc....I know I have the drive strenght. I think my biggest problem is lack of training partners and maybe a little tweaking of my form.
