I had a bit of a conversation w/ a woman at work this morning that sort of got me thinking about stuff. The topic: goals. Now, I know most everyone here thinks of health and fitness goals, as this is a health and fitness web site. But I'm talking about life goals. I got to thinking that I'm 29 years old and have never honestly and sincerely sat down and assessed my life goals and followed through with anything that I planned. I've only just drifted where ever the current happened to flow (we're talking big picture-wise). And as I started to think more about it, I was truely amazed at how very much I accomplished and how far I've come on my short time here on earth. I'm working in a top 5 market, directing the 3rd highest rated newscast IN THE NATION, I'm making more money than anyone in my family has ever made at my age, I have a wonderful, loving b/f, I've done a moderate bit of traveling, I have a college education....well I could go on, but you get the idea.
The amazing part is, I planned none of it. I never would have pictured my life turning out as it has over these past few years. In fact, I really had no idea how it would turn out. So as I'm thinking about all the good stuff that has drifted into my life thus far, I began to realize: "I've accomplished this much without even really trying, just think what you could do if you really applied yourself and started planning out long term goals that mean something to you." So, I ask you all now, how many here have life plans/dreams/goals? How many here have accoomplished what they set out to do and achieved what they sought? How many here have just been more like me and let yourself drift through the big picture, taking things as they come and making adjustments when necessary? Also, what is one big goal your either still working on, or would like to accomplish one day? Mine is to write a novel, then another and another and....you get the idea. :) |

Congratulations for all of your accomplishments! My biggest goal in life was to get married and have kids. Family is the biggest goal for me. Status and money means nothing to me. I grew up poor with a big family (4 siblings). Ultimately though I would like to open a bed and breakfast with my wife and just kick back. -------------- My gym dues are not paid with money. |

Win the lottery... really, I think that is everyones goal!
Actually, cafenervosa, I was quite alot like what you described... just kinda floating along, living day to day without really assessing what I wanted to do... bascially, just be happy... I did eventually set a goal, get into radio, which I met... been doing it for ten years now... fiddled around in smaller markets for a while, floating around again, then set a goal to work in Red Deer, Alberta (sandwiched between Edmonton and Calgary on Highway 2)... I even wrote that goal down... now I'm there... haven't really set a goal again... I've been here two years... that of course was a career goal... I like it here.. have no desire to move a larger centre like Toronto or Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary would be okay, but for now Red Deer is where it's at... As for a life goal, I have never really thought about it, again, the lottery would be nice, but I guess a life goal would be something to consider... I have a great wife, two wonderful kids (when I'm at work and they are at school:laugh:)) but I haven't thought much past that... guess I should... Great topic! t -------------- Tim "I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self." Aristotle TimDay@freetrainers.com |

Hmm,goals. Yes, I've always been the planning type, UNTIL I realized it's pointless. In my high school in Florida, I planned to go to college, so I took all the "hard" classes and was in a bunch of afterschool clubs and so on...prepared for the SAT's and scored good, applied for and got a bunch of scholarships which would have payed for most of my schooling, then got accepted to the college I wanted....and know what?....here I am now in Europe, the place where I DID NOT want to move but my parents made me(i had no choice at the time in the matter). So all of my planning resulted in me having to give it all up and come to a place where I would have to start all over. But know what, looking back, I'm glad things turned out this way and that I didn't go to college back in FL. I have a wonderful fiance here, have only one more year to go at a University, etc. And I am happy..who woulda though.
Point is, I have truly come to believe that the best things happen to people when they don't plan and just let things come. We get so caught up with plans and wanting to achieve and prove to others we're good that we don't stop and think "is this what I really want?" So I say, live your life and let things happen. Plan only what you must, and let the good Lord do his job....and you will be happy :) |

Goals are important no matter what your station or accomplishments in life. It is a question of focus. Goals do not have to be huge, just something attainable. Goals also reveal what our priorities are. I think alot of our problems can be attributed to a lack of realistic, attainable goals. My achieved goals have been education, family, career, security. (I say that after 25 years effort). Of course, for each goal I have had benchmarks. I met some of them in spite of my best efforts. I still have many goals yet to reach. Keep pressing forward. Set your goals. establish benchmarks. Press forward.

It's good to have plans and goals but, be flexible. Don't get tunnel vision, you might miss something.
I live a very happy life. I follow my dreams and one always leads to the next. I stay open as to not miss an inspiration. My  has never lied to me so I listen and wait for it's cues. |

Deep stuff....I have always drifted, but was stopped by this girl about 15 years ago. She stuck it out with me, and helped me get out of the messed up life I was in. My goals then were to survive, and to always be one step ahead of my adversary. I should not be here, but through my wifes faith, and strength, I am. My goal is to be the best husband and father I can be! I like Hec, believe that family is the number one goal. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife, and a child. My decisions and goals are all based around them.
Ultimate goal for myself; Peace and forgiveness for things that I was involved with in the past. Also, that our family hangs tight, no matter what life throws at us... |

My first goal was to live to see 18. I worried to much when I was younger because I didn't know exactly what was going to happen to me next, I lived in a small bubbled world that no one really entered. Now I kind of drift (my life was turned upside down about a year ago, I had a job, was starting to save money, had someone that I loved and thought that loved me, was going to settle down and have a family, and then I lost my job and things progressed from there, got kinda dark for a little bit). I'm starting to stablise, but one goal that would be very nice of mine is to have a family of my own, a home that I can call my own, someone to love me and care about me other than my parents (which I much appreciate their cares and concerns, but they won't be and aren't always there with me), to have a stable and providing job that I enjoy going to (that's why I'd like to become a personal trainer), to maintain a nice and healthy body, to have and receive respect and most of all to not have to worry about being alone the next day or to have to up and move. In some peoples eye's it may seem simple and common place, but I never had that growing up, and not even now. I hope my military career will help me get there, that was one step I took and am proud of, the next is to get the want to do some dangerous and challenging things out of the way while I'm young (I want to help people that are in danger and the such, so I'm looking in to possibly going into the berrets or rangers) and go to college through the gaurd and then commence to my final goal (that and to have a decent sized garage with a couple muscle cars I built from the ground up and nice car repair/restoration area).-------------- A determined mind is the best weapon in any situation, a strong body is the road to victory.
