Hi all, I am new to all of this place but i have gone throught he profile for excercise and nutrition. I have a question about the Nutrition part of this.

When i was pregnant with my daughter I was gestational diabetic. My mother is full blown late onset diabetic and she was adopted. I never met my real father so there is a good chance of me becomeing diabetic later in life. That is another reason i am starting to loose weight and get back into shape. My question is though, The nutrition planner said that i should take in 2700 (give or take a few calories) a day. I am used to getting 1500 a day around about. My doc said that would be good to prevent the diabetes. Also looseing weight would help as well. Should i follow the diet plan or should i follow the doc?

well I Would say that 2700 for Loosing weight is quite high. I find the Caloric Recommendations of this site to be quite high. But if your Doc Suggested 1500, he may not have been taking into consideration your activity level, you may need to add some Calories to make up for your increased Activity level.

Setting up a diet with a "formula" is a tough thing. Not everyone is the same, and so these always need to be tweaked to individual needs. I would go with what is working for you. You know your body, at least you should, and this is the first step to correct dietary needs(calorie amounts) for your needs. Whatever you settle on, make sure you divide it up and have 5-6 meals per day, and not 3 bigger ones. Try to make them as balanced as you can, protein, unrefined carb, veggie, healthy fats. This is always a good start. Once you get a bit more advanced and into your training regimine, you may want to take things a step farther and set up p/c/f macros to attain certain goals. My wife is a diabetic, and does very well on high protein diet for instance. This might work well for you with diabetic tendencies, normally the first thing you want to do is cut out refined carbs, for they have your biggest impact on blood sugars, which of course impact insulin.

the plans here are good but a touch high, your doc suggesting 1500 cals sounds about an average figure for most dieters... But the site here will give you a good estimate for how much of those calories should be carbs/protein/fat,, you have to be careful on carbs being diabetic and probably should eat frequently say 6 plus times a day at good spaced intervals and balanced meals.
ultimately you'll find a nice enjoyable diet if you analyse what you are putting in,, I've done myself a spreadsheet with my foods so it adds it all up for me now, but you can do it on line here too in the diary- it's worth it. I took a year to get what I call my own lifeplan going. So do the diary thing- it's worth it.

BB1fit is right I have tried the High Protein diet and it does work very well for me, But that is not the case with all, Being a diabetic I had to go down many avenues before I found what worked for me. My doctor was very surprized and after the weight lose and good workout program I am now insulin free and med free. Be careful of your sugars diving, that is the problem that I have, I carry glucose tablets in my purse just in case I am getting sugar dives. I recently found that 1500 calories aday is a very slow weight loss for me but that may because of my age. The slow down in metabolism is happening. I space my meals to 4 to five aday, depends on what I want for the day but keeping it at 1500 cal. I had gestational diabetes with my last two preganicies and did not listen to my doctor which may have been the leading cause and the hugh weight gain to bring on the diabetes. It is good that you are concerned now before it is to late.

I have a few questions about diabetes and weight loss... I was 2 years old when i found out I had diabetes. I will be 30 this May. I have never had a problem with my weight until last year. I have gained 60 lbs in the last 4 months. I dont eat any sweets or "junk food" but I am gaining weight at a very fast pace. I am 5'2" and I now weigh 180lbs. I am very upset about my weight. I used to model and now I am in a size 14. I dont get alot of exercise but I never sit down either due to the fact that I have 3 children. I just cant seem to understand why I am gaining weight like this. Nothing has changed as far as my diet or exercise. What is the fastest and healthiest way I can loose this weight? What types of foods should I be eating? Could it be because of my age? Also, I dont EVER drink water. Could that be an issue as well? Thank you in advance for any replies.
