Yesterday, I just had an epiphany...I have been working hard for four months I was wondering why wasn't I getting any bigger. I was getting more defined in all places, but then it dawned on me I need more protein in my day.
The question being does protein shakes help much in gaining overall size?

Protein is used to build muscles( wel actually the amino acids)...protein shakes are god cause they are quick and easly digested.......if you eat a high protein meal after workouts, it might take almost 2 hours to be broken down to be used by the muscles. whey protein shake may only take 30mins or so. The 2 hours after you work out is a very metabloic state, what you eat and drink after that will "go to" the muscles. This is the build state and is very important. So a protein shake here to me is very crutial.

Thanks for the info bigandrew, but if your goal is to lose weight should you still drink protien shakes?

Yes, you want to lose bodyfat, not muscle. Post workout is your most anabolic time, your "window of opportunity" moreso than any other time.
You are in very catabolic state, but also you are in super compensation mode. It is imparitive to get nutrients to your system as quickly as possible. Studies prove this will in no way inhibit fat oxidation.

Since this is the best time...Should I drink a protein shake and eat something w/ a considerate amount of protein as well then? or will the shake be enough (around 30-40g of protein)?????

If your shake consists of 30-40g of protein that is enough for that period.. your body can only take in so much protein at once, the rest might be a waste.
some people consume too much and some not enough.. consuming too much eventually is stored as fat.

Don't drink this shake immediately post workout!!

Quoting from Repper:
Get a blender, peanut butter, some bananas, and a high quality protein (Draper's Bomber Blend. www.davedraper.com), make it to taste and drink the whole thing.
Don't mind-f**k the process, just drink it and adjust based on your body's reaction, i.e. weight gain/sluggish/humongous growth...whatever.
