right now i'm trying to lose a little extra weight for the summer. and one big thing that i love is fruit. espcially because it curbs all my cravings for ice cream and burgers and other fatty foods. but i've been surfing through posts and they all seem to say no fruits for dieting. is there any fruit i can snack on just to kill cravings? i love oranges and they are not mentioned much here as either good or bad. what is the deal with them? are green apples ok too? i'd like to know because fruits save the day for me so i don't have massive sugar and fatty cravings.

Tell me about it, man. What is the world coming too when you can't eat fruit? Its absurd. Im interested in knowing if oranges and green apples are ok too. Also, whats the status on pink grapefruits, kiwi, dark grapes, melon and frozen peaches.

I do know that eating berries are the best fruit for a diet, though. Maybe that helps some.

You can have fruit, just have it earlier in the day.
Apples are an awesome diet food, there was astudy done recently with one trainer's clients - half were put on a diet, the other half the same diet but an apple before each meal. The apple group lost more weight.

You could be having cravings because you are not regulating your blood sugar well enough, or you aren't eating enough earlier in the day.

Jsom & Froshman, I hear you barking loud and clear on this one, big dog. I could seriously live on fruit alone and hate that they are not considered "clean" foods on a strict bodybuilding diet. I mean, what's up with that? I mean, don't we do and give up enough already for the sake of big biceps and 6-packs? Well, I eat them anyway, just less than what I would like, because without them I think I'd just go for candy. My favorite is mangos, by the way. They are seriously God's Gift to us. I say a prayer and sing Hallelujah every time I eat one. Then I stab myself with a plastic fork as punishment for eating something high in sugar and throwing my glycemic index out of wack. However, I heard there's a beauty pagent going on in heaven, so when I drop dead this will all be worth it.

AmandaK, I heard the same thing about grapefruits, but whether it's true or not, I have no idea. Figures it's the only fruit I hate. :(

tofurkey, bodybuilding diets are very different from regular eating. you don't have to give up fruit forever, just pre-contest as you get lower in calories and cut out as much sugar as possible.
i am not anti-fruit, but your situation is different than, say, jsom. Pre-contest dieting is not a balnced, normal way of eating, which is why you don't do it all the time. Since it is not a prolonged period, it isn't bad for you, plus you usually supplement sufficiently so you don't lack nutrients.

Let me find the more scientific explanation of this for you and paste it in...

"Fruit is not necessarily good for a strict fat loss diet. Fruit tops off liver glycogen, and the rest can be stored as you know what when LG is full. Fruit, though very healthy, does not have much place in a good fat burning diet. If you must eat it, best as early in the day as possible. Vegetables on the other hand are a must. they will increase your insulin sensitivity, and help you feel more satiated with your meals(the fiber is essential). "

I also bumped a couple of relevant posts - one is 'insulin spike question' (something similar, look for it, and another is a post with fruit in the topic line, look for it.

Well, that is good to know. However, I try to eat similar to my pre-contest diet all year long - you never know when someone is going to scout you out in the mall and ask you to pose for them...

I must always be ready!
