So, lately I tried the Atkins(week 2 done 7 pounds total lostand also have made some odd kilo gains to some of the exercises I do) .. But then I read about this being the quickest way to burn muscle and a thread about Atkins doesn't take into account the bodybuilders... I'm no bodybuilder, but am a progressive gainer looking at fat loss... So where have I missed the point in the fat loss/muscle loss issue as I thought that Atkins was all about retaining the maximal muscle whilst achieving the maximal fat loss ??

neil, you shouldn't lose muscle on a high protein diet. And from your past posts, you include complex carbs in your plan, so you aren't starving.
The only things that might cause muscle loss in your situation would be if total calories aren't high enough, if you have too big a deficit in calories, you will definitely dip into your muscles for needed fuel. Your body will hold onto it's stored energy and sacrifice muscle first becasue mucle is metabolically more active and requires more fuel than fat. So, in times of famine it doesn't make sense to hang onto excess muscle.

Make sure your calories are high enough to support your exercising, with a 200 or 300 calorie deficit. This means taking your basal metabolic requirement, adding the amount of calories you expend above that by exercising and then subtracting 200. Does that make sense?

I have seen people on Atkins who are eating less than 1000 calories a day. no wonder they are dropping weight - they are eating up their muscles!

yeh, got it asimmer!! I had a couple of days when food was just not wanted by me.I eat maybe 3 times and just a little chicken or fish- about 700 calories in the day. I knew it and thought I must eat carbs a bit to push my appetite up as for meals I had not fancied the brocolli or veg at all- just happy with the protein part. It taught me with food I can choose what to eat and when- choose a little veg and a little meat, 1/2 a slice of bread.. You know I always thought more about whole tins and loafs, not slices and peices. So I see my calorie downfall, thanks for giving me the right info yet again! I'll be back to my proper profile guide of about 1700 basal metab calories soon enough and in better control losing the last few pounds(I hope). But I must also up my training level- A morning jog soon, now the sun has come out here in the uk.
