This is a subject I've heard a lot of different things about. Some people stress that you should do your morning cardio on an empty stomach, and thus your body goes right to your fat for energy. However, others suggest having a small meal before hand. Now, I know while you sleep your body is in a catabolic state, so when you wake up it seems reasonable to have some form of protein and simple carbs to stop further muscle loss. However, so many people seem to think otherwise. I used to do my morning cardio on an empty stomach, and i did see some results... Now i have a small bowl of cereal with skim milk and maybe an apple before my morning cardio. However, since I'm at college now, my diet isn't exactly up to par, so I can't really tell if im getting results.

How do you guys feel about it? Any advice?

It depends on what you goals are. You should fill out your profile.
For weight loss, not eating before your workout will help you accomplish youg goal - I would also not eat for about 1/2 after your workout as well.
If you are trying to gain muscle, this is not the way to go!

So, if you are trying to gain muscle, what should you have before any cardio?

If you have plenty of fat to spare, it is probably a non issue and you will burn more calories of course doing it on an empty stomach. On the other hand, if you have gained lean mass and your goal is keeping muscle while burning fat, then it is very much an issue and some sort of fuel(protection) would very much be advised to protect your lean mass. With smaller amount of fat stores, your body will not give up fat so easily and you will lose as much muscle as fat.
