In an effort to add cardio, I went jogging/walking two days ago. It wasn't an overdone jog at all... I am following a routine put out by a web site called www.coolrunning.com called the "Couch to 5K" program. Seriously, the jog/walk was not hard. However, beginning last night and this morning, I am having the worst shin splits ever!! What causes these? Can I get rid of them? I was hoping to jog tonight, should I not? :(

don't jog, give up for a day or two... Then start again on the same jog or a little less and take a day or two off again... It's you getting used to it. I used to use the eliptical machines and go about 5 miles. But when I thought I could plod along on the treadmill, I was mistaken- the shin pain was awful. It's just a new stress.
You will get rid of it by keep jogging a bit every other day and resting well after but gently build it up as your bones get used to this new pressure you are putting on them. You will do 10k and think nothing of it very soon.

shakkai I had exactly the same thing happen.. I am training for The 3 Day, a 60 mile walk for Breast Cancer.. I've been walking for months, but started mixing in some running and the shin splints were terrible!
Yes, you have to let them heal and also do some exercises to strengthen them.. put a towel under your foot, and use your toes to scrunch it up is the one I used but someone here may know others.
It's taken several weeks now but I am back walking pain-free.. had to give it up totally for a week, then ease back. Even started doing a little running this weekend, so far so good!
