Which is the best position for push ups to activate the most chest muscle fibers?
Hands at wide shoulder, close together at shoulder, or lower chest close together? When placing my hands close together in position about the bottom of my ribs, I can feel more strain on my chest, but want to make sure that I'm not doing something that can affect my shoulders..
any input?

The closer n your hands are, the more your triceps have to work, the lower position sounds kind of odd.
Try doping push-ups with one or both hands on steps, so you can lower your chest a little farther. Switch it up, one arm on, other arm on, arms on steps on either side, toes on step, hands on floor. Try plyo push ups where you push off forcefully and land into the downward motion, control it, though.
Stimulate your muscles at as many angles as possible. Your hands should be about where they are width-wise when you bench press.
-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight.
