I'm confused. What is allowed in a cutting up, fat burning phase? Oatmeal, grapefruit, green apples and salad are the sorce of most of my carbs, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick, so I guess I should stick with a more Atkins-esque diet where I do high protein and fat with no carbs. However, I heard that low carbs leads to depression and no energy and I don't want that (although I would do it for a few weeks to burn the fat if necessary.)
Here's my quick profile:
I'm 23, Male.
6'1", 190.
My diet:
typically- oatmeal with soy milk and frozen berries/peaches. Grapefruit. Occasionally hard boiled egg whites.
Baked chicken in a spinach or dark lettuce salad with tomatoes (regular or grape), low fat cheese, olive oil, grapeseed oil, red wine vinegar... OR Baked chicken with frozen vegetables, i.e. peas, carrots and corn and tobasco.
Protein bars (protein, with sugar alcohol, low carbs).
Apple(s) with natural peanut butter.
This seems OK to me, I can't imagine I'm doing something wrong, but obviously I am.
Or perhaps it's my cardio:
HIIT 3X a week in the morning before breakfast.
(HIIT at 1 minute intervals, starting at 3.5; 4; 4.5; 5; 5.5; 6; 6.5; 7; 7.5; 8; 7.5; 6.5; 6; 5.5; 5; 4.5; 4; 3.5.)
My bodyfat is between 14-17%. I don't want to lose any muscle if thats possible. I don't have too much muscle to lose, so I wanna preserve all my hard work.
Thanks!!!

It does not appear to be an issue of the diet. It appears you are eating the typical cutting diet. Are your portions in line with your goals. Generally to get leaner you need to reduce calories and or increase calorie output. Since the diet is in line (and that is a correct assumption) then I would say you need to increase the cardio. In addition to HIIT, which is cardio vascular in nature, you need to add some fat burning aerobics. Try adding a few moderate longer sessions, biking, jogging, elliptical...and add a longer low intensity session too. If your body is adapted to the HIIT cardio it will reduce in benefit over time. And needless to say adding the longer lower intensity sessions work for many to burn fat...the trade off is it takes more time.

So, what if I did HIIT one day, moderate jogging one day and brisk walking on an incline one day, would that be good or do I need more? Also, should I cut out the grapefruit and green apples? Was I right in cutting the oatmeal and frozen fruit in the morning? And whats the best approach to not burning muscle just fat?
