does the bar weigh?
We have several of them, and one feels much lighter than the others, so I don't know how to calculate my lift weight.. barbells I know are 45 + plate weight, but the machine feels much lighter. What do I put in my exercise tracker for these??? -------------- : ] ~Danielle The deepest rivers flow with the least sound. |

Thats a good question I always thought the bar on thoose was 45lbs. I thought they just seemed lighter due to the pulley and counter balance system on them.-------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. When I use the smith machine I don't count the bar as weighing anything because it feels so light.-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

The Smith bar at my gym weighs only 15lbs. I do tend to count the bar just cause it makes my Smith lunges over 100lbs. Perhaps silly, but it makes me feel stronger :dumbbell::big_smile::dumbbell:

Is that the one over by the new hammer strength machines Azon? I tried it yesterday, and the rotation on the clips was opposite to the one at my gym at home, hey, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but man was that hard to get used to!

I believe thats the one jcannuck. Clips are different - takes a bit of getting used to, I agree, but now the other type take getting used to as I am so used to them being this way. How do you like the gym otherwise?
They've changed things around so much I am still searching around for the other older equipment. (I am not thrilled that the universal and the seated calf raise machine are gone :( Plus, it is very crowded with all the machines! But on the good side - some of this new stuff rocks! I actually Like the Hammerstrength ab crunch - and I generally loathe doing abs! |

That's where the universal went...we were looking for that! Staff is awesome, a little crowded though with all the new stuff. I know they are going to expand into the "pit", but the sooner the better! Thanks for the tip! Tim let us try it out for free.

The bar on Smith Machine at my gym is quite heavy, its a Normal bar, plus the weight of the Guide's. I believe that it weighs in at 85lbs. there are no pulley's for countering the weight. |

I sure hope they do (expand). It's been talked about for years.... Maybe I should ask them "When?" but I would rather keep my hope alive LOL

Azon, I was asking around for you, but my brain decided not to tag along yesterday, so I was asking if they knew "Lynn", no wonder they couldn't figure out who I was talking about! We were there between 3:30-4:45, I looked around, but I don't think you were there.

I don't know Lynn either! LOL I'm Lana. They may remember if you say she's that tall blonde who talks a lot.

The weight of our Cybex smith machine bar is only 15 lbs. It depends on the make, and smith machines usually don't use a pulley, that would make it NOT a smith machine.

Most of them will have a side note, that says how much the bar weighs.........Inside the machine( I seen one taken apart) is a counter balance.......kind alike on a draw bridge or catapolt....that sopossly makes it safer, and give you a "lil spot" much like a person would. Most counter balance at 30 lbs... meaning the bar weighs 15 lbs.......whiel other couther balance is at 20 lbs making it 25........-------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

i have never used a smith machine , is it easier that free weight squats ,because i have heard that people can squat so much more on a smith machine than just a 45lbs. bar and weight???

Well, it's fixed.. you don't have to stabilize the weight on your body, so I guess that makes it easier.
It also has the counterbalances which is what brought me to my question, I knew it wasn't near 45 lbs on its own. -------------- : ] ~Danielle The deepest rivers flow with the least sound. |

I thought it was the weight of an olimpic bar..45lb that felt lighter b/c of the machine. Btw, do you include the weight of the bar when entering it into the program?

Smith machine is a "controlled envirnment".....it makes you squat straight. If you watch any powerlifter, they actually lean over to about 45 degrees maybe more. Smith machine make syou stay at 90 degrees.....which being a free weight squater is very hard for me anyways. Also the machine balances and stablizes the bar for you,so you don't have to use your own stablizer muscles. However you can do things in a smith you can't do on a regualar free weight squat. (Ex. you can put your feet further out in front of you, and lean against the machine and hit you glutes and hams more.) Smiths have their place, but if you want real power and strength free weight is the way to go.-------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |
