I keep hearing that workout should be in the range of 40 min. to an hour. I just don't see how really advanced bodybuilders finish their workout in an hour when some of them do more than 5 sets in each exercise working in 2 body parts. Are advanced lifters allowed lift more than an hour, but should average lifters keep it under an hour?

Hi kunsei83. The rest time between sets is the one you should be considering here... for example I usually rest 30 sec to 1 min between sets, and usually finish my workout in about 1 hr. I do 4 sets and about 5 exercises for big muscle groups (chest, back, legs, shoulders & traps) and 3 for small ones (bis, tris).
Some people like to take 2 or 3 min breaks betwee sets, and thats why they take longer to finish their workout.
Hope this helps,

I agree. You might also think about if you are alone, or if you are working out with a partner. Then the workout times really rack up. I can do my workouts in less than an hour by myself, but with a friend, whew...I'm lookin at like an hour and a half. But with a friend I do more sets, but compromise on what type of exercises to do.
