Hey,
At the beginning of June, I will be flying to Juarez, Mexico. I'll have to be at the airport at 4am. Our group will be eating breakfast at the airport. What healthy breakfast foods are there at fast food places like McDonalds and Burgerking that don't take a toll on calories and don't have any trans fat (partially hydrogenated oils)? Thanks! |

None. HOnestly the only thing I can think of would be orange juice and a fruit and yogurt parfait from McDonalds

Some places have Bagel sanwiches. . . see if you can order just the bagel and egg no meat. . . or if they offer a muffin selection. Short of that, ask if they will sell you a salad off their lunch menu as a "healthy" alternative.-------------- Love me as I am . . . Let me worry about how I look! |

I think this is the second time you have inquired about fast food. Either you are not serious about your goals, or you are trying to justify eating garbage. It's not gonna happen bro. You have to cut that part out of your life if you want to succeed with your goals. What's wrong with packing a breakfast/lunch?? It's just that I'll be out with my friends and I don't want to be seen as too picky. Otherwise, the health topic will come up and I can get pretty worked up about that.
I hate eating fast food. It's gross and hardly ever good for you. I was just trying to find things I could choose when I'm out and about with friends (which doesn't happen very often at all). |

My sympathies ABmagic, I hate it when friends are a barrier to my goals, but real friends will respect that you are trying to look after yourself. If people complain about you being picky you have to ask why are they doing this? Do they feel threatened that in your journey to improve yourself you will leave them behind?
Ask them if you can go somewhere other than Mcdonalds to eat - they may want to do the same. It's not being picky, it's respecting your own body. When my husband wants to go to Mcdonalds I accompany him but I don't get anything and either eat before or afterwards. |

ABmagic, if you're only eating this stuff occasionally with your friends, then don't worry about it. I allow myself to get fast food once a week or so, and it hasn't slowed my progress. You run into trouble when you start eating it on a fairly regular basis. ok, since we are talking about fast food, I have to ask what you guys think of the new healthy choices menus at the various resturants. I know that with real dressing, everything is high in fat, so if you buy the salad, don't use the dressing, but what about the salad itself? Also, what about the new veggie burgers, or chicken filet on a wheat bun?? If you absolutely needed to eat fast food, would those be the best choices to go with?

be careful about the salads. they can contain trans fat (partially hydrogenated oils), especially salads with chicken.
I've looked at McDonalds fiesta salad and it doesn't look too bad. Under 500 calories, and no trans fat that I can see. |

I agree with mzakal, I have Burger King about once a week for a treat, other than that I eat lowfat and healthy the rest of the time and I have not seen it effect my weightloss/muscle building progress. am I the only one that thinks fast food once a week is more like a punishment?? I would much rather bbq a burger at home. They taste so much better, and for just about the same price as one of the value meals. David, I agree that most fast food is gross, but a few things are fairly edible and save me the hazard of keeping a lit charcoal grill in the backseat of my car for when I'm extra busy. I, for one, like Wendy's chili and spicy chicken sandwiches (no mayo of course) every once and a while. I came close. I just picture that vat of chili sitting in the back, being an unpopular item. You know, how it grows that layer of "skin" from sitting there for a while. Cristal...very true. It happens on all levels of food processing, though (and by processing I mean butchering/harvesting all the way through) and I've come to terms with the fact that there's a lot of gross things in/on anything we eat. Pitbull….I was afraid this might happen, so I think I should clarify what I said. I eat a very strict, closely monitored diet. I do not advocate regularly eating “junk” regardless of what a person’s metabolism happens to be. What I failed to make clear was that if a person is going to eat fast food, it is entirely possible to make more sensible choices and plan around it. The example I used of a spicy chicken sandwich and chili comes to a total of 680 cal, 21g fat, 78g carbs, and 46g protein. This is in no way optimal, but is definitely something I can adjust my diet around if I choose to eat it once and a while. The processed crap in fast food is bad, but again, I’m talking about eating this stuff only occasionally. The reason I made my original post (which was admittedly overbroad and an inadequately short version of much more complex answer) was because of the groupthink that tends to pervade fitness communities that the average person is virtually committing suicide by ingesting a single gram of sugar or in any way straying from the “ideal diet.” 99% of the population is not training for a fitness competition nor for an elite athletic event, but we at times treat everyone as such on these boards. If a person can reach their health and fitness goals while making the sporadic bad decision, I do not see a problem. My biggest mistake is assuming that everyone understands that these “cheats” do not mean a triple Whopper with cheese with x-large fries and a bucket of soda. If it comes across that I am advocating a dangerous, unhealthy lifestyle, then I have either not explained myself well enough or have been completely misunderstood. mzakal....ummm, once again, not trying to be gross, but what I meant is not what is in the nutrition label. The chili has burgers that have fallen on the floor, burgers that are over cooked, and the burgers that have sat unused for 3-4 hours all crumbled up in it. It is something that their employees are told to do upon hiring, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't eat it. :angry:

I don't avoid fast food solely because of the lack of nutritional value but because it tastes like s***. If I'm going to cheat on my diet I'd rather do it with good quality food - farmhouse cheeses and home-made apple pie + icecream - that sort of thing, rather than a flavourless elderly burger that as cristalbelle so rightly points out may have been on the floor amongst other places.

mzakal, great post. I can see your point. I was just jawing with you, I hope I didn't come off like a jerk. I don't really have a problem with stuff that's been on the floor. I obey the 3-hour rule. i think none of the menu in McDonalds is healthy..they are junk food..nothing is good..i sugest you just leave them behind..cut it out, man
