I've been thinking about switching from eating oatmeal in the morning to a cereal that has more protein in it like Kashi GoLean or Total Protein, or even something higher in fiber like All-Bran or Fiber One. Is there any benefit to sticking with plain old oatmeal? Why does oatmeal get so much hipe?

Gets the hype because it is not processed, and is a complex carb. If you are looking to add protein to your meal, try mixing it with protein powder or eat some eggwhites along with it.-------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

also, if you switch to the kashi go lean, make sure you're near a bathroom. Not trying to be gross, but it's worse than eating a couple handfuls of cashews. -------------- Spark the fire that will torch the numbness inside. If you look too far ahead, you will lose sight of today - Carpe Diem - |

Maybe a small combo of all three. Every morning I eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal, a bowl of Total Protein, 5 egg whites and one egg. That will be too much for you but maybe smaller portions.

kashi golean has a bit more sugar than oatmeal. I don't know about the others, but I agree with Ivan, oatmeal is better for you, you know everything that is in it and if you need flavor you can add it - add cinnamon, Atkin's syrup, or splenda and some vanilla protein powder (after cooking) and it tastes better than the others and has more protein!-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

Thank you for all the replies. I currently add a half scoop of protein to my oatmeal or just eat a few egg whites along with it, but by the time I'm done, I've had over 200 calories (the bulk of it coming from the oatmeal), so I was just looking to save some calories without sacrificing too much nutrition...

all the processed cereals are the hype. you can't beat natural products for the honesty. Special K aint special, the low fat is attained buy using sugar instead, All Bran isn't 'all' bran, in fact nowhere near 'all' and contains sugar. I've found non branded or cheap copies of the hyped are usually better- in that the ingredient list is usually smaller, simpler thus cheaper and better in sugar/fat content etc...
I use a lot of plain whole oats(£1.49 a kilo), oat bran, cracked oats and porridge oats. Also cheap bran flakes and always seems to be the highest fibre- good old weetabix. NO THANKS TO sugar puffs, frosties, rice krispies, go lean or the new total protein(new in uk advertised as fitnesse- everbody wants it and ours is as sugar coatedly carbolicious as it is protein alledged enriched)... Sorry I think I'm getting cynical in old age or bitter because lifes a permanent struggle to keep my fat down!!! tofurkey - even if you are eating 1500 calories a day, 200 is not that much for breakfast. i don't know what your calorie intake is - but you need a little more at breakfast.
1/2c dry oats is only about 110 calories, eggs aren't that many calories. Oatmeal is a good choice for a weight loss diet - it will keep you full longer, it doesn't spike your blood sugar, it isn't sugary and it really isn't high calorie. Consider how much 1/2c dry oatmeal cookes up to - a cupful is actually a lot. The same amount of dry cereal (caloriewise)just isn't as satisfying. -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

I never thought of it that way, but you're right, I'd probably need double the cereal to make me as full as the oatmeal (besides that I don't need milk in my oatmeal and would probably desire it in cereal). By the way, what oatmeal do you buy that only has 110 calories per 1/2 cup? I currently use Wessex Oat Bran and it has 140 calories per 1/3 cup.

Sorry, Quaker oats - 150cal per 1/2 cup, but 4g fiber, which is about 16 calories that are non-glucose spiking, beneficial, draw out the rate of digestion.
Still way under the 300 calories per 5 meals for a 1500 calorie diet. -------------- \\"Inscribe this on the charm that dangles from your navel, girls.
