I'm trying to shed some fat and gain muscle (duh, like 90% of people). I have a protein shake first thing in the morning, then do some light cardio like walking or jogging, then some HIIT cardio on my ellipse to burn fat. Afterwards, about an hour before I workout, I usually eat a complex carb (whole wheat chex cereal and milk for example) and then about 20-30 minutes before I work out, I eat a protein bar that's got quite a few simple carbs (lots of sugar in it) for quick extra energy. Without the protein bar, I find I get too tired to effectively continue my workout.
Is that counterproductive - ie should I eat more complex carbs pre-workout and forget about the protein bar? After I do my weights, I usually do 20 more minutes of HIIT cardio for more fat burning.
Also, what type of carbs/how many should I be eating post workout? I drink another protein shake after the workout, and usually have a lean meat with some veggies and 1/2 a pb+j sandwhich on whole wheat bread (the jelly is a simple carb to get energy back into my cells.) Then a few hours afterwards I have a small snack (low-simple carb high protein).

Well I don't pretend to be the be all know all, and Someone may correct me here, but this is my take on it...Try doing your Morning Cardio on an Empty Stomach if you want to loose Fat. For a pre-workout meal eat about 1.5 hrs before your Weights, have a protien Shake, and some Complex Carbs, if you want to add abit of Calories mix the shake with Skim milk, and perhaps some berries. For Complex Carbs, I find I get the best energy from the following: 1/2-3/4 Cup or Oatmeal, 1 cup of Brown Rice or Whole wheat Pasta.
You might want to down Another protien Shake right after, and then say 3 hrs after, have another solid Meal, Say Chicken Breast, Rice and Brocoli.
Personally I try and stay away from Simple Carbs, and Carbs from Sugar. The complex Carbs are a better energy source, and stay with you for longer.

Never ever train on an empty stomach. This is never good for you. It will go to your muscles first for energy, which is counterproductive. I would recommend the complex carbs before your morning cardio session. I think the "need" for the protein bar might be in your head. I have found that a lot of the barriers I have come against have been mental. Try eating something healthier before your workout. I try to eat something well rounded. I have been addicted to tuna fish salads lately.
