I realize that weight lifting using the upper body also strengthens the neck muscles, but are there any exercises in particular that can assist in this area? In my case, when I had my thyroid removed due to cancer, they went back for some lymph nodes that were located under my left neck muscles and had to cut the largest muscle in two (ok, I forgot the name of it), creating weakness in that muscle. I would like to strengthen that area, if possible, and hopefully, after losing some weight combined with the exercise, have some definition in my neck again. I know, I know, I'm old so my neck may never have definition anyway, but, hey, it's worth a shot...Okay, now you can laugh.-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Hi vedakathryn, I've seen some people work on neck exercises at my gym... They grab a D handle and put it on a high pulley, then facing away from the machine and holding the D handle on their forehead they flex their head forward... they use a very light weight...
I don't know if this is correct, I would like to hear another opinion on this by a more experienced member, but you might want to give it a try... Hope this helps -r. |

When I played football, or attempted to play anyway, we would do neck exercises with a team mate. Get on your hands and knees and have your husband apply pressure against the back of your head as you lift your head up (3-5 second contraction with him releasing your head up slowly. Then have him do the same thing with his hands on your forehead, then each side of the head. 3-4 time each way ought to do. the longer contraction will wear the muscles out and they are small to begin with.

a friend of mine told me to just simply push against the resistance you can make with your own hand, and hold for 6 to 10 seconds, repeat in all directions.

Forward Free Hand Neck Resistance
This is one of the best exercises for working the frontal neck muscles. Implementation: (A) Place your hands directly onto your forehead. Now with your anhds on your forehead lean your head all the way back. (B) Applying resistance with your hands bring your neck downward, pause and then lower slowly under control to the starting position, resisting all the way down while your hands continue to apply pressure the whole way. note: since your pressing your neck forward, the resistance with your hands must be pressing backward in the opposite direction. And another.... A Lying Face Down Barbell Plate Neck Resistance Here we work the rear neck muscles. Implementation: (A) Lie face down on a flat bench with the top of your shoulders about even with the end of the bench. Place a flat barbell plate on the back of your head and hold it in place with your hands. Lower your head downward to the lowest possible comfortable position. (B) Inhale and raise your head upward and back in a semicircular motion as high as you comfortably can. Continue raising and lowering your head until the prescribed number of repetitions are completed. Note: I suggest using a towel on your head for a cushion. to add another one...
it's used in wrestling. lying down on the floor bring your mid body as far up as you can and rest on the top of your head. Think of it as a yoga move. Stay for 30sec and repeat. |

I think I remember that in my younger days when I was in gymnastics, I had forgotten that one, it's only been forever ago! I was heavy into the uneven parallel bars and used a lot of different exercises for strength and more flexibility. Thanks, oscarg!-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Hi Veda, I had surgery on my neck as well, a tumor removed from the left side (salivary gland) of face and neck. I have some muscle paralysis and weakness from this..
One thing that I found helpful after recovery was to turn my head as far as possible to each side, touching chin to shoulder, then reaching chin to sky - I couldn't do this to the right at all for so long! Stretching, and massage will really help firm up the skin and other tissue in the neck along with doing exercises to strengthen the muscle. -------------- : ] ~Danielle The deepest rivers flow with the least sound. |

Thanks, datdanigirl, for sharing your experience. I hope you are doing better now and your suggested exercise is something I can do even watching t.v. and in the car, etc.
I was rear-ended in a car accident just a few years after my surgerys and had a serious case of whiplash and that messed up my neck muscles, too, so I would really like to do some of these things to help strengthen them as they tire and get sore so easily. I didn't sue the girl as I hate to resort to that, but the neck pain of so many years maybe would of been alleviated somewhat if I had been able to afford a chiropractor or something...I am hoping that exercising will help lessen the headaches and pain relating to that and the weakness of the other muscles due to my surgery, it can't help having gained weight there, either! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Wow these are some great suggestions. I do have a question for BB1Fit. For neck exercises. Since I'm just starting the healing process, is this also a good beginner exercise.
