I am a 38 year old woman with hyopthyroidism and my estrogen levels are also decreasing. My research has revealed that as your estrogen levels decrease it is common to gain weight in the middle and in the thighs. I was very into fitness an cut before my thyroid shut down about 5 years ago. I am currently on .125 of Synthroid. My weight will not budge. My doctor reminds me that I am getting older and bla bla bla. Every time I start a workout program I get fatigued and stop. My doc says more activity should not affect my needing more Synthroid. I'm wondering if the lower estrogen levels combined with the thyroid porblem are to blame. My Blood tests are normal for the Synthroid. I am leary of HRT at this time and have heard bad things about soy. Any advice?

I am 42, had thyroid cancer 13 years ago and thyroid removed and am on .150 Synthroid levels. I had a 7 pound weight gain nearly each year since. I was a weight lifter and exercise enthusiast when I got cancer. It was discouraging and I stopped most exercise and eating right. Being here and in the last few weeks I have had to take a good hard look at what else is going on in my life...my eating habits were awful and I wasn't exercising, like you, I would get too tired and give up. For four weeks I have changed to eating 4-6 meals a day, breaking up my calories evenly as this is a suggested meal plan for our thyroid difficulties and I have exercised nearly every day. Try working cardio 3 times a week, even if you only do it for 10 minutes and increase bit by bit each time and stay within 50-60% of your maximum heart rate (226 minus your age) when beginning until you reach an active exercise level. Try doing weights in between the cardio days. Right now I do weights and follow with cardio. I have lost 10.5 inches and three pounds since June 1st doing this, the first sign of hope for me that I am not doomed to obesity due to my missing thyroid! Your estrogen levels may be changes slowly, but my doctor had mentioned that there won't be any drastic changes until just prior to and during menapause and not to worry until then, though we are all different.

You can instant message me if you like at any time.

I have hypothyroidism also, I think my current dose of synthoid is .175 the lavener pill. and my wife had hers irradiated and takes .150 and my daughter was born with a hypothoid and takes 1/2 of .150. When any of us are low we feel tired but if we take our pill every morning then we don't feel tired just from exersizing. My wife was on HRT and she had lots of problems, And when I handled her estrogen tablets to much I started reading minds.

Wow, you guys are in this battle together. It is awful when levels are low and that awful tiredness creeps in. I still have days that are more tired than others, but the thing is, our bodies are monitored by one pill a day that is based on one level, yet when you do not have thyroid problems, your hormones are changing and your thyroid assists, whereas when hypo or no thyroid you are relying on that daily dose regardless of your specific daily needs. Thankfully the medication comes close and saves our lives, so as you said, if you take it the same time, everyday you should have less difficulty. Have you or your wife had weight gains since starting on the meds, I see you have 11 children and you mention wanting to get to 155?

Gaining weight is one of the first signs of a hyoactive thyroid. I went from 165 to 212. And it doesn't come off very well.

You know, Woodie, for two years I kept telling my doctor I was tired, I was gaining a bit and having to work very hard to keep it off whereas before I didn't worry, he ran every thyroid test imaginable and they all came back normal. Two years later after being treated for six months for a bump in my neck with antibiotics I insisted upon having them removed it - - for over two years I had cancer and it had spread. I was 29 and just had a baby and had two other sons. It was upsetting to me that my levels were normal. I tell people to insist on proper care and if you aren't feeling right, insist on more than a pitiful look, which was all I got and told that I was eating too much! I worked out every day at the YMCA, even played basketball with the Timberwolves on my lunch breaks, ran the tracks and ate wonderfully! I can only say that due to my good health at the time, it, and the Lord, saved my life.

I am 25 years old and have a thyroid problem but I am unable to go to the doctor to do the tests to find out if its hypo or hyper. I was just wondering if any one knows a good workout plan to help me out. I can shed a couple of pounds here and there but I am unable to lose the weight I need. I cant say that I necessarily eat healthy but I hardly eat three meals a day and when I do eat I eat very small portions. I am active but not as much as I would like to be. I exercise at lest three to four times a week.
