Welcome to FT! Yup, you should stretch/warm-up before you exercise.... a few minutes on the bike will help..
Your first set is a 'warm-up' set for that exercise... use a very light weight and then move the amount of weight up with each progressive set... you should have a hard time completing the last few reps of a set... Also, don't worry about getting to 15 push-ups right away... do a set... as many as you can, rest for about a minute or so, do the next set, again, as many as you can... It won't be long before you are completing a set and wishing there were more reps to do! haha... Again, welcome to FT... and I would also suggest filling out a profile too! t -------------- Tim I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self. - Aristotle You have the power to change a life right in your own hands. - Paul Brandt |

Hello teathome. You mention you have high blood pressure. do not go up to your max when doing cardio. Check this with the dr. As for the exercises, remember to start out slow. You are a beginner and don't expect miracles overnight. If you can only do one rep, so be it. At least you did it and the next time try for 2.
Good luck. -------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Hi everyone. I am 48, 137 pounds, and have been a stay at home mom and secretary and I am very out of shape. I signed up for the Home Training for Beginner Level. It tells me to do 4 sets of each exercise, reps are 15, 15, 12, and 10. I can't imagine doing even 1 'girl' push up let alone that many and then being able to continue with the other exercises. Am I really expected to do 4 sets? I get worn out after 5 minutes on an exercise bike although I do enjoy walking and once I am out there I like to keep on. I'm also confused about stretching before the sets. Do I or don't I? I was told my blood pressure was up. Are there exercise I should not attempt, like push ups for example? A lot of questions, but if anyone has advice I would appreciate it.

Hi teaathome,
Welcome to FT, listen to these guys they know what they are talking about. Also, with your push ups, do what you can on the ground, "girly" push ups and then do the rest against a wall standing up. Before you know it you will be doing all sets on the ground. Do check with your Doc. about what you can do as far as cardio is concerned. Walking is great exercise, try to keep at a steady pace and just go as fast as you can while still being able to talk. Even 20 minutes a day is great to start off with. Most of all have fun here, you can do anything if you set your mind to it. Donna |

Thanks for the encouragement! Tim, it makes sense to me to use the first set as a warm up for that exercise. It's encouraging to hear from all of you that I can take baby steps. And I will be.LOL. I am really out of condition.

Good to have you here, teaathome, check out the fitBuddy search below, too, where you can find some great post regarding areas you are interested in.

Well, I exercised and I didn't die! I am really starting out slowly with this. I tend to start out gung ho and then feel so terrible I don't continue. I actually did 5 'girl' push ups, better than only 1 like I thought I would be able to do. And I really did them, I mean I felt it. Even just 5 push ups was work. And except for the Dips Behind the Back (I could barely do one of those), I did a complete set of all the other exercises. So even though I only did one set of most of the exercises, not 4 sets of all of them, I feel good, and I'm looking forward to my next exercise day (sort of, this is a bit scary.LOL)I also think, from doing the nutrition guide, that even though I'm overweight, I'm not eating enough. I don't put enough gas in the tank, just the wrong stuff. Question: How am I supposed to breathe when doing the Dips Behind the Back? I think I'm okay with the others.

I believe, you breathe in when you lower yourself, and breathe out when you raise yourself back up... I could be mistaken on that. I've also heard it doesn't matter how you breathe during exercise, just so long as you do!

Good to see you did the 5. I remember my first attempt at dips! What an effort. I only did 1. Keep up the good work.-------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Good morning everyone! I am brand new to this site and to exercise. Can someone tell me how long my workouts should be at the beginning?

Hi joannebrns -
Your workouts may take longer at first because you haven't gotten the routine down pat yet. Sometimes an hour and a half just because you spend so much time figuring out the next exercise, how to do it, etc. Don't be discouraged, it will get smoother and faster, eventually your workouts should be no longer than an hour. Cardiovascualr (aerobic) training should be gradually built up. Start with 15-20 minutes and add 2 minutes a week. This will help your heart get fitter instead of fatigued. -------------- \"Inscribe this on the charm that dangles from your navel, girls.
