Okay, since i know we have a few beauty specialists (i don't know the actual term for it) on this site, i thought i'd ask.
When i was young i never dealt with dandruff in any way. Within the last 2 years i have gotten some light dandruff and it persists even whilst using dandruff shampoos like head n shoulders. So here i am...asking the experts for their valued advice. |

Found this on the net, also gave you a link to the site, hope it helps.
In a 4-week, placebo-controlled study of 126 people with mild to moderate dandruff, use of 5% tea tree oil shampoo significantly reduced dandruff symptoms.5 Unfortunately, this study was not double-blind: the researchers knew which participants were receiving tea tree oil and which were receiving placebo. For this reason, its results can’t be taken as completely reliable. (For more information on why double-blinding matters, see Why Does the Natural Pharmacist Rely on Double-blind Studies?) Highly preliminary studies in the 1950s and 60s suggest that folate taken orally, or vitamin B6 applied topically, may relieve some symptoms.2,3 Essential fatty acids, zinc, iron, and vitamins A, E, D, B1, B2 and C have also been suggested as treatments for seborrheic dermatitis but there is no real evidence as yet that they work. http://healthinfo.healthgate.com/GetContent.aspx?token=e0498803-7f62-4563-8d47-5fe33da65dd4&chunkiid=21558 -------------- THE NATURAL WAY IS THE ONLY TRUE PATH TO SUCCESS, PRIDE, JOY, HAPPINESS, LONG TERM FULFILLMENT AND SELF-ESTEEM! |

You need to determine if you have dandruff or dry scalp before you can treat it.
Are they "flakes" or are they very fine "specks"? Dandruff would be the latter of the two, and it is an itchy and incurable disease of the scalp, meaning, it can only be treated and not cured. A dry scalp is usually caused by external influences and manifests itself in loose skin. This skin comes away from the scalp in flakes. This can be cured once you determine the cause and remove the adverse influence. However, although this is the easier of the two to 'fix' the effects are often more dramatic, and disturbing. Give me an idea of which applies to you and I will see if I can recommend something. Julienne |

Here's the thing...its more flaky (it seems...its not very fine like i would imagine 'specks') My head never itches unless im just starting to get worked up (doing physical labor) then it doesn't itch after that.

Please answer the following questions for me:
1. Are you using your body soap for shampoo or a regular shampoo...what is the shampoo if you are using one? 2. Are you actually shampooing your hair (scrubbing your scalp)or do you do the quick "slather and rinse"? 3. Is your hair really thick? 4. Is your hair oily? 5. Do you use styling products, if so, what are they? |

1. I am using a regular shampoo. I used to use suave for men deep cleaning...now i'm using head games moisture bliss.
2. I actually really shampoo my hair (scrubbing scalp) 3. My hair is really thick, even though my barber/stylist thinned it. 4. My hair is never oily unless i go like 3 days without showering. 5. I HARDLY ever use styling products (once a week if that). When i do i use 'short n' sexy hard up gel' |

Going without showering is gross and could be a cause of it *yuck*
I use to have dry scalp/dandruff not sure but I went to a doctor and everything nothing worked so I got some selsen blue w/ aloe and use that once a week and use pantene pro v shampoo and conditioner, not a speck anywhere anymore....Just try conditioning your hair to keep it moisturized will probably work wonders, did for me. |

totally off subject, but the hard-up gel is awesome, isn't it? i buy the stuff in bulk when it goes on sale.
actually, i've noticed that it makes my hair extra crispy when i use it without using conditioner first. while i don't have dandruff, i'm feeling my hair right now and i mean it's REALLY hard. i'm a freak about my hair and have that whole "i spent 15 minutes styling it to look like i just woke up" thing going on, but i digress. my point is, i use the same stuff you do and i don't have dandruff, but i also condition my hair regularly. i'm wondering if the hard-up gel could be drying your scalp out so much that you need to be using conditioner. i don't know a lot about what actually causes dandruff so i could be talking out of my rear here, but it's worth consideration. oh, and i use matrix biolage shampoo and conditioner for normal hair. i won't list all my styling products because i'd need an entire new thread. like i said, i'm a freak about my hair. -------------- success comes before work only in the dictionary. that's right. |

Tex, from the mental picture you are giving me, it sounds more like dry scalp. Here are a few things you can try, of course, it wouldn't hurt to go to your stylist and have her/him take a look and maybe give your scalp a treatment first. The fact that your scalp itches when you begin to sweat is an indicator that your scalp may be congested a bit. Even if you don't make a special trip, be sure and have your professional take a look when you go in next time, ok?
1. You could try a different shampoo, the one you use is good, but your scalp could be reactive to it. 2. Keeping in mind that your scalp is skin and not this "thing" that holds your hair in place, look at the rest of your body, is the rest of your skin dry too? If so, examine your diet and hydration level. 3. Your hat could be playing a small part in this too...not in the sense that it causes dry scalp, but in that preventing air and constricting blood flows could be contributing factors. 4. Hard Up gel is one of my favorites, but will build up on the scalp and hair in an instant. Now, if you are using it once a week, I wouldn't think that would be the case, BUT STILL, if you are not getting all of it out of your hair and off your scalp when you do use it...this could simply be the product flaking off. Hope this helps, Julienne |

I found this on a bunch of websites. People say that if you use apple cider vinnegar, or white vinnegar rubbed into your scalp and you leave it there for a few hourse, and do this for a week it gets rid of dandruff.
They say that drandruff is caused by a sort of disease of your scalp and that the vinnegar can kill it. I'm trying it right now and it seems to be helping a lot with the flakes and the itching. Be carefull though that you don't get it in your eyes. |

Never actually saw this thread before. I've got a problem with dandruff and was wondering what's the best products to wear. Already picked up a few tips ie scrubbing my scalp instead of just lashing the shampoo on. Also, I don't really shampoo my hair every day. Twice a week maybe as I found it made my fine hair more flyaway. Also I tend to use mousse every day to keep it off my face as I'm growing it.
Any tips appreciated. |

Use vinnegar. I'm completely honest that I started using it a week ago and now my dandruff is gone. My head never itches and it's the first time it's been like that since I was a little kid.
I know it sounds weird but try it. Search for dandruff cures on google and see what you get if you don't believe me. -------------- Tom |
