Unfortunately BB1 is right; they are skinny since their bodies are missing very important nutrients and no lean muscle mass.
I would never advice that to anyone. :surprised: -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. www.nme-pro.com |

I have many vegan friends and they are all incredibly thin. I was wondering if I would lose weight if I went vegan, or if my friends just happen to have high metabolisms. I would fill out my nutritional profile, but the website isn't working for me.

Check out the 'protein intake' sticky thread in the intermediate & advanced weight training forum. Some good related stuff in there. I don't know where the outlook that a vegan diet is so healthy ever came from. They are skinny due to the fact they have no muscle tone. For starters, where do you get your B vitamins from? Serious mistake, especially if you want to get lean and muscular.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Vegans don't eat any animal product WHATSOEVER.... None. I just spent a weekend with quite a few of them, and they don't look healthy at all....

Vegans are just looking for attention, we as people have been eating animals since human life began. It is so annoying when people tell you they are vegans because they are so unhealthy and think they can solve everything with soy products, blah! I especially love when people won't eat meat because they "slaughter animals" but they all have wool blankets and pillows from sheep, or wear animals on their back...so hypocritical sometimes...sorry had to vent

Isn't it funny that way? "Save the animals!!" I love animals, don't get me wrong. I don't know what I'd do without them. They are my life. But we are OMNIVORES for a reason. We need the stuff that's in meat. I guess they just want to feel special or something because they have nothing else worth doing.

Exactly. I love animals too. There is room for all of God's creatures - right beside the mashed potatoes.

That is great!! LOL!!!! To add to that, I love animals very much(alive). But, if it comes down to me being hungry, and I am face to face with an exotic species of some sort, I will admire it, but I am also going to tell it, sorry buddy, but I am hungry! And you are food!

============= Well, I have actually studied veganism and I know that a person can be healthy on a vegan diet, if they do it right. Many vegans don't pay attention to their diet and end up eating potatoes all of the time, hence the unhealthy friends. However, vitamin supplements, soy products, and other meat and cheese substitutes can provide a healthy diet. Even children can be raised completely vegan and healthy. They just have to be very careful when it comes to eating. I'm not trying to say that any of you should do it, I just don't want anyone to be misinformed. Check out this website for more info. http://www.veganhealth.org/shv/index_html#benefits As for my question, the website shows that vegan people are as healthy or healthier than non-vegans in general. Why? The main argument for vegans is chimpanzees. Chimps are 98% vegan. The 2 % comes mainly from cannabalism. They can eat meat, but they don't need to. It is easier for them to be vegan rather than killing for food, and so they are. Humans can eat meat, but they don't need to. The argument as to why we shouldn't eat meat goes with economics and animal rights, which I will not get into. Enough rambling. |

Hey all. I just wanted to say I am Vegan. I am not a tree-hugging, animals-rights activist...but I just decided to try it. Over a lengthy period of time, I have found I feel much healthier. True, You have to pay more attention to your daily diet and what you are putting into your body, but that is a good thing. I am realizing that there are more ways to get your protein, vitamins and essential amino acids than just grabbing some steak, cheese, and a big glass of milk. The long term health benefits vary. If you do it right, it can greatly reduce risks involving cardiovascular disease, obesity and much more.-------------- Aarica O |

I can understand not wanting to eat animals, but I have always wondered, for a vegan, what is wrong with eating cheese and milk...

I can't speak for all, but I would say that Vegans tend to feel that the chemicals that animals are given inorder to make these products is harmful to them and unjust. For me I simply abstain from them (most of the time) because of the health benefits that i have read. such as lowering cholesterol, lowering chances of heart disease and different types of cancer. It all depend on the person and their preference i guess.

Aarica,
I don't eat many dairy products for the same reasons you do. But the chance of hormones being used on them is also a big turn off for me. I definitely feel healthier and enjoy the challenge of making new dishes and discovering new products at the grocery store. One of our best discoveries has been quinoa. My family loves it! We use it in wraps or burritos in place of rice or stuffing. My reasons for going meatless are purely selfish, for my own benefit, not because I'm a tree-hugging, PETA supporter (which is why I don't call myself a Vegetarian or Vegan). Also, DH and I did research and have decided to incorporate fish into our diet. I am still not sure how I feel about it, but what I saw tells me it's more good for me than bad, so I will manage it only once a month... But as with everything in life, I reserve the right to change my mind. ;-) ~b -------------- *all Magic begins in the Mind* |

hay guys.. read this thread and just though to get a simple answer for a very simple question of mine :)... if animal rights are there and we should not eat animals cuz they have right to live.. what about the rights of plants and vegs??.. think about it... a plant or veg gets birth (just like animals) feeds it self (just like animals and humans) grows and gets healthy (just like animals and humans) gets old (just like..) and dies (just like..)... so what about their rights???
guess what?... i'm raising my hand for their rights.. we should NOT eat vegs and plants.. :D lets all starve to death khekhekhekhehe and yipshe i guess this is why they are still chimpanzees and we evolved (contraditory though) into humans :D ========================== Quoting from yipshe As for my question, the website shows that vegan people are as healthy or healthier than non-vegans in general. One of the sadly missleading non-fact is about steriods/hormones in raised feed animals. For the most part the north american markets are far too picky forthat to happen. I know that the Canadian markets require that the half-life of all substances given to animals be well passed before that animal can enter the market as a consumable. What that means is that the animals are grown and kep
