I was wondering if beer is a good source of carb b/c I know that some runners used to drink beer after their long runs to recover in the old days. So, can it be a good source?

Sure, I like to drink a case or so before working out for that extra bit of energy boost! If you can drink more it is even better.

Make sure you get the malted type for an even better source.

This is a staple "food" of all champion bodybuilders.

It's funny how people will guide you to say what they want to hear. I constantly remark to people that I don't look hot, and they always correct me and tell me otherwise.

Some people really have no common sense. Hey I heard that eating a tub of lard right after a workout is great for recovery.

I've heard that the lard will coat your arteries and make them nice and slick for the blood to really move through them. The beer thing...I think you will find that if you slam the first 6 or so and sip the rest for an hour you will get the best results. Just don't eat pop rocks with the beer, that might kill you.

Be sure to get the new low carb beer to wash down the low carb vitamins with.

I'm working on my six-pack right now. I also switched from fully hydrogenated oil to partially hydrogenated so I could be healthier.

I am currently getting rid of all the whites in my eggs and eating the yolks. Great source of protein.

Wow, I never thought I'll get this many criticism from all of you. I was asking a serious question, and BB1 just had to make fun of me. In some really really long distance races(like the 50 miler races), they used to serve flat beers at rest stops. There's carbs in beer so that's why there are so many commercials about how their beer has the lowest carbs for the carb watchers. The carbs are from barley so I thought it was a good source unlike sugar. I was asking this question b/c I do like to go and drink beer so if I am gonna go drink beer, can I just not eat much carb, and get my carbs from beer? I wasn't thinking of drinking beer before workout and stuff like that. Isn't barley a good carb? Jesus, atleast if you're gonna make some comment on this, be respectful or atleast be funnier about your comments b/c your jokes are little too bit dry. So work on your funny comments by socializing a bit instead of drinking protein shakes all the time.

kunsei alcohol and training aren't the best bedfellows. Thats the bottom line. Nice shot about the protein shakes though. As far as the jokes being dry, I always like mixing my exlax with Canada dry and getting the dry runs. See? A fun running pun!!

on that note, we're not making fun you you kunsei, but when you make a post flaming all of us for being "dry" as you say and then telling us we need to socialize instead of being protein shakes, i think it's you that needs to work on the tact.

beer is not a good source of carbs because the alcohol counteracts any good effects that the grains used in the fermenting process would produce. back in the day, people knew a lot less than they know now. the people who were handing out flat beer at rest stops probably didn't know that alcohol will dehydrate you completely and also keep b-complex vitamins from being absorbed by your body.

alcohol in moderation is ok, but certainly not before any type of exercise. your body needs all the water it can get and alcohol will completely take that away.

this is just the tip of the iceberg, i'm sure bb1 can give you a much more detailed explanation of why this is a bad idea. he is by far the most knowledgeable person on this site and i would show him a little more respect. the extent of his knowledge is incredible. and in his defense, i think the prospect of someone asking what you asked in all seriousness kind of shocked us all. perhaps we were wrong to respond the way that we did, but i don't think you should be so critical of our handling of the question.

i really don't think we insulted you as deeply as you suggest - humor, especially dry humor, is a huge part of this community, and while it may take some getting used to on your part, the benefits of learning how to laugh at a different kind of joke for the knowledge trade off are worth it.

i wasn't saying to drink beer all the time for nutrient, or to drink beer as a postworkout drink. I was just saying if I feel like drinking beers, then if i could skip on some complex carbs. So, go back to drinking your protein shakes.

to answer your question as you stated it just now, the answer is still no. the alcohol offsets any positive effect that beer could have as a nutrient.

the reason beers advertise themselves as low-carb is to get people who have been suckered into the atkins diet to drink them. the trade off is that when you drink, your body will metabolize the alcohol instead of the fat, so it's self-defeating.

and about the protein shake bit, if you're going to insult us, at least say we drink buffalo urine. that will especially get to charlie.

I did ask the same question in the beginning. i asked if beer is a good source of carb. That doesn't mean that I'll be drinking beers after workout and stuff like that. I don't know why you guys interrepreted that I'll be drinking it during workout or preworkout. all I wanted to hear was the answer from howdiekat that it doesn't matter that beer has barley in it b/c of alcohol.

Also - the effects of alcohol on training have been discussed, seriously, at length before. try doing a search in fitbuddy and reading some of the posts on the subject.

I have to admit that I'm one of those derelicts who enjoys a good brew. Two or three beers a week shouldn't make a big impact one way or the other.
