I'm new to FT. I will be starting the weight loss and definition program this week, but I don't see anything about cardio, which is what I mostly did before when I went to the gym. I normally do 45-60 minutes on the stair climber, or recumbent bike, usually on the "hill climbing" program. The weight program designed for me doesn't look like it would take more than 30 minutes, and I can usually only afford an hour in the gym (or an hour of walking when I can't get to the gym), so is 30 minutes of cardio enough? Should I do it before or after weight training? And then, what's a good program for my "off" days? I allow myself the op to fit in 6 days a week, to make up for a day skipped because of work or other distractions. My goal is 5 days in a 7 day period of excellent workouts, burning at least 300 calories (which I can usually accomplish in 45 minutes of cardio alone, even though I know the weight work out burns longer). Any advice on how to make my workouts count, especially on days when time is short? Thanks!

Welcome to FT! You won't see cardio in the programs here, but if you do a search using fitBuddy at the bottom of the page you will see many posts on cardio. It has been mentioned in many of those posts to do your cardio following weights. You may even want to do your weights every other day and cardio on your off days. And, yes, the more you weight train, the more muscle mass you gain, thus the more calories you burn 24/7, vs. cardio basically burning during workout and a for a bit longer. If you work too hard, too much on cardio you can also risk burning lean muscle, too, so that is something to keep in mind - I guess I'd rather work harder on the weight training and do cardio as an additional weight burner as then I am rebuilding muscle and the muscle is burning those calories continually.

Sounds like you are working hard, good luck with your goals.

Thanks, Veda. I'm naturally muscular, so I'm not don't really need to accentuate, or make bigger what I have. I thought cardio was the way to slim down? Am I wrong? I can do the weights, no problem. Just not interested in getting "bigger", but getting "slimmer". How can I streamline, sans the cardio?
