I was wondering how to get the muscles protecting my spine stronger and bigger? What exercises will I have to do?

When you workout your back, ALWAYS do pull-ups. That's the best overall exercise for your back. You can also do close-grip seated cable rows, T-bar rows, and behind-the-back shrugs. These excercises will help build your lower back all the way up to your neck.

Back extensions, just be careful not to go too far. I mean don't do an "unnormal" movement with the back. Don't stress the back further than it already is (and if you want to be even more careful then don't turn and bent over in the same movement).

I agree with jbennet. Pull-ups are great. One-arm dumbell rows are also one to try.
Good Luck!

What I do is, when I gotta work my back muscle I devote all my time just for that. I everything from One arm rolls...to my favorite Pull-ups. So Work hard and Good Luck!!!

If you want your back to get bigger and stronger, do a natural motion, do wide grip pull ups, and inside grip pull ups. In time add some weight to your pullups. your back will explode, and your lat pull down weight will increase big time!

I would love to know of some good exercises for the back that doesn't include equipment for the days I can't get to the club

The best exercises for the back are 3. 1 is bent rows. 2 is pullups, 3 is (my fav) deadlifts....these will give you huge lats and a very strong lower back!
