I think shoulders down would be better than up, but back is god.

My shoulders are kind of rounded forward and my posture is generally bad - probably from years of slouching (should have listened to you, Mom!) are there any specific exercises I can do to remedy this problem? or at least make that part of my body stronger so when i do make an effort to sit up straight i'm not aching after five minutes?

thanks!!

shrugs will help and squats will big time.

Imagin when you walk around that your superman( or supergirl) an dyour wearing a cape....stand up tal so it can wave in the wind, shoulders up and back.

I noticed you are 5'10". . alot of taller women have a tendency to slouch down and shorten themselves. My husband is 6'4" and I notice him 'rounding down' all the time.

Stand up straight - imagine there is a broomstick down your spine, up through the center of your head and stretch the top of your head up, keeping your neck aligned with it. Shoulders down, chest up. You will feel what I mean when you try this!

I went through some training with a Pilates instructor because I had terrible posture and was starting to feel those aches you mention. Learning the stretching, movements, and breathing instruction was absolutely worth it. I still slip sometimes, but feel MUCH better now.

My posture was always bad too. Just starting a good resistance program (weights) and eating right actually strengthened my shoulders and back enough to have a natural good posture. I now find it very easy to sit up straight without pain. Unfortunately I am not you and am unable to know if you had the same pain I did. I can't imagine a good fitness plan hurting though .
