Thanks for the information and encouragement! I love the support you guys give, it really makes me feel good about what I'm doing. I've altered by diet to include lots of chicken salads, lots of tuna, milk and all the other goodies that come protein-packed. My cardio consists of using a skipping rope and using that till I can barely stand (which started off at about 15 skips :( )and I go jogging weekly with a friend.

I bought some York dumbells which are great, and intersperse using them with using pushup stands (I can do way more pushups with the stands since my wrists are so puny they can't take the regular type over 10 reps).

Do people recommend I use high weights, low reps? And when is the point to stop, do you just stop after a set amount of reps/time or do you stop when feeling tired or "the burn" ?

Oh, also, I agree with you CADmonkey about the whole body thing. I used to have massively muscular legs three years ago (looked very odd on my tiny bony frame!) as I used to sprint for the school. Since I started uni however, I never ran anywhere near as much and my legs degraded to a shadow of their former selves. Definately an area I will improve upon!

Thanks again for the support :)

Hello all! I'm new to FT and I'm really hoping the information and the community here can help me finally get the body I dream of. I'm a 19 year old university student from London and I have always been underweight and totally underbuilt due to some freaky hyperactive metabolism.

I have a very bony frame and I'm frankly sick of having the body of a 14 year old girl so I've decided to totally redesign my lifestyle. I'm fit and healthy so cardio isn't a problem, it's weightlifting that kills me (and also I'm not very flexible). Thing is, all the information on this site and the internet in general is very overwhelming and I don't really know what is the best course of action. I'm a bit stupid really, I kind of need someone to tell me exactly what to eat, when and what exercises to do and when.

I'm hoping to achieve bulk around the chest and shoulders primarily, then improve other parts of my body after I'm comfortable with how the whole "getting muscles" thing works.

If anyone has the patience to help (command!) me to achieve my goals then it would be greatly appreciated. It's time to turn my life around (the motivation is there!). Thanks.

First, let me say I think you're doing the absolutely right thing by approaching this at this point in your life. When I was your age I weighed 125 lbs and hated it and the only advice I got was a doctor who told me to eat more fat. I exercised moderately but when I hit a certain age my metabolism "snapped" like it does with so many people and I balooned up to 150 frighteningly fast. Now it's going to be more difficult to get the way I want to be than it would have been then.

But enough about me and on to a little bit of advice I've heard.

Work your whole body. You may want to get mostly upper body right now, but I've read in multiple places that the systemic physiological changes that promote muscle growth are maximized when you work the bigger muscles like in your legs and not just the smaller ones you wish were bigger.

Hopefully someone else can chime in with a better explanation of the details and some more advice, but for now bigandrew is right. Try out a program, stop by the boards for advice and support. AND GOOD LUCK!!! (Although I gather hard work and perseverence count more than luck in this sort of thing)
