Hello all! I'm new here and just wondering is it okay to eat one junk food item aday? Say, one low fat cupcake that is 1.5g of fat and 130 calories. I know to be good and disciplined at eating healthy means strictly fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. But,my body needs some kind of sweet treat. So, do you all think it would be okay to splurge on low fat sweet treats once a day? I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder just be in good shape. I'm content with where I'm at pertaining to size and weight, just considering maintenance and knowing how to balance my diet.

Try a protein bar, at least that will have a positive benefit of less fat!

130 calories isn't going to hurt too much, but most of that's probably coming from sugar. There are definetely healthier alternatives. If you need something sweet, you can't go wrong with some fruit. Or if you need something chocolatey or whatever, I've been using low-cal ice cream bars I buy at wal-mart (berry ridge or something.) They're made with splenda and only have 60 calories in a decent sized bar.

One thing you should realize is that low fat usually doesn't mean better for you - they simply replace the fat with sugar or refined starches, which doesn't make it any better for you.

Some protein bars are a decent replacement, but they're usually a tad pricey (especially one per day), and many have added sugar or hydrogenated oils. A protein shake that's low in carbs/fat would be an even better replacement.

thanks for all of your input! What is a good protein shake I can get? Are they in powder form? I'll consider this! Fruit just doesn't fix my craving!

I use 100% whey protein shakes from GNC - get them 25% off the first week of the month, only $18 for a 3 pound tub. Their chocolate flavor is pretty good. If you don't want to get that big of a tub, get the one pound bag of chocolate caramel. Only comes in that one size but man it's good.
