Hi,
I have come back to this site after a hiatus of too long. I need to get back into shape and this site is great in helping me along.

I was wondering if anyone had some input or advice about dealing with being on meds for anxiety. I did a search but there wasn't too much. Is anyone taking lexapro or wellbutrin? I was sooooooooo tired on the lexapro that my doctor prescribed wellbutrin to counteract the side effects of the lexapro. I just started the wellbutrin this week so too early to tell I guess. Also, I have gained a good 10 pounds since starting the meds. Some of it is from inactivity and poor food choices, but I think some of it is due to the meds, or at least the lethargy that I have been experiencing.

Anyhoo, I would just like to know if there are others out there who like to give some advice/input.

Also, I read the thread about the Omega 3. Are those found in the vitamin aisle? Is there one that's better than another?
Thanks,
tj

Hi TJ, we joined about the same time. I don't know your meds but you can buy fish oil capsules for your omega needs. I've also seen omega vitamins in the drug store. The fishoil is also good for helping to meet your healthy fat requirements. Welcome back.

Thanks Charlie,
I think I read somewhere that you should take fish oil or omega capsules with Vitamin E, or it doesn't work as well. Have you heard of that?

No but I'm not a real vitamin guru.Try using the fitbuddy search at the bottom of the page. With vitamins I usually read posts by BB1 and figure out what I can afford. Take a look in the supplement section too.Is that your husband? My wife often makes me wear the bag.

Too funny about the bag...I never thought about that before. That's my son, a big SpongeBob Squarepants fan

I am on Zoloft for anxiety. 50mg keeps me from having panic attacks which trigger lots of over eating for me. I didn't realize how much I ate when I wasn't hungry (and bad foods at that). I am not sure about lexipro and wellbutrin (I thought wellbutrin was another name for zoloft or at least very closely related to it). So far I think not being anxious all the time helps. I can go work out and not feel like the world is going to fall apart. It's easier to spend time on myself too, and I feel like I am doing it for a healthier reason. I think once you get back in your routine you'll be fine and the weight gain that could possibly be caused by the medicine will be gone.

Also my doctor said that anxiety meds can make things worse the first week. Because of that I started out at 25mg for a week. You might just need to wait this out. It took me about 2-3 weeks to really notice that I was consistently feeling better.

Hi bobosensei,
Zoloft (like Lexapro) works on the serotonin. Wellbutrin works on dopamine and (to a lesser extent) norepinephrine. It was prescribe to counteract the side effects of the lex. Seems crazy but I'm willing to give it a shot. Anything to get rid of the lethargy I was experiencing. I used to have panic attacks too. I used to be embarrassed about it, but I think that added to the anxiety! Now I try to be a little more open. I don't let everyone know, but putting this thread out there was a big step for me. Thanks for your response.

Also, I read your profile...I went to law school for a semester. I was working full-time and went at night. It became too much work, and my boss didn't like the fact I was in law school, so I ended up dropping out. Good luck to you if you decide to go.

Thanks :)

Don't be embarrassed about the anxiety and panic attacks. I used to be the same way too, I suffered since I was a small girl. In school I cried every day for no reason and I was always worried. When my dad passed away it got worse and I kept it all inside for 7 years. It feels so good to not worry all the time like I used to. While I think these meds are overprescribed, when you are someone who really needs them, they are invaluable to your emotional and physical health and well-being.

Hopefully your meds will get things going the right way soon.

Hi,
I'm on Lexapro for anxiety. I been on Zoloft and Serzone. Unfortunately I can't tell you how it has effected my weight loss because I only discovered this site today and decided to get serious again. I lost weight while on Zoloft soon after I had my disorder diagnosed and started on medication. Serzone really messed me up physically and mentally, I was on it for 2 years and didn't realize how bad it was until I had to come off it because it was being discontinued. When I started on Lexapro I asked my doc if I could take wellbutrin at the same time because I had read that it counteracted some of the side effects of SSRI's. But he said it wasn't a good idea because its really designed for stopping smoking and has some bad effects of its own...!! (I changed doctors after that)

What dose of Lexapro are you on? I take 10mg at night and feel a lot better than when I was on Serzone.

Come to think of it, it really is more difficult to get myself motivated since I've been taking meds (about 6 years now). I'm just generally more relaxed and content I guess.

I'm thinking about taking some kind of metabolic enhancer like xenadrine to get me more active. But I worry that then my anxiety will go up again...I get jittery after a strong cup of coffee.:(

I started taking Lexapro just Saturday, but today I have been doing a lot of research on it. I have never been on any other kind of meds, but I knew when it was time to start. My anxiety stems from my weight issues and I am now terrified that Lexapro will make me gain. I am already in a constant struggle with weight loss..I exercise everyday, whether is be running, kickboxing or weights and can't even shed one pound..My eating habits I feel are unflawed..I am just so sick and tired of this constant battle that gets me nowhere fast.

Hey Zero and gretch ,
Zero, I take 10mg of lex around dinnertime. The wellbutrin is 150mg once in the morning. It does make me a little jittery almost bouncy, so I try to take it with food. Not sure if that really helps. I have noticed that I am not as fatigued as I used to be. I actually am getting up in the early am to work out, and am liking it. My one friend even said my eyes look better, not as zoned out. I would think a metabolic enhancer would up your anxiety. I'm sure it would mine. I get jittery after coffee too, so I gave it up, along with diet sodas and most sources of caffeine. Oh how I miss a good cup of coffee in the morning:)
Wellbutrin does have a higher occurrence of seizures and the profession doesn't know why. It increases with caffeine and alcohol use. I risked it and had some beers over the weekend and was fine. I find the alcohol hits me more quickly tho, probably becuz of the lex.

gretch, give the lex awhile to see how it works for you. Every med effects people differently. You may have no problems at all. I think my weight gain mostly stemmed from the extreme fatigued and crappy food that I ate to deal with the fatigue. Anxiety is a bitch that a lot of people find hard to understand. Mine started happening after a drunk driver hit me while I was walking. I guess the vulnerability that I felt was too much. It went away for awhile, but this past year has returned for some reason. Anyway, give it time, and keep running. I think it's great that you are doing 10K & 15Ks. That's just great:big_smile:

Thanks for your responses. It makes such a difference to know I'm not the only one dealing with the anxiety and accompanying issues. I'd like to keep in touch to see how the meds are working. Good luck!
