I'm new to this whole 'in shape' thing, and to the boards. What I'd like to know is, do I really need to work out cardio, legs, arms, back, shoulders, and diet with fake sugar, no cheeses, no snacks, diet drinks and all that 'fun' stuff, when all I'd really like to do is tone abs and thighs? When I was younger, to get abs, I only needed to do situps...never touched my diet...is it cuz I'm older, cuz I've had kids...or what??
Thanks for any advice and encouragement :)

Yes, being older has a lot to do with it. In high school, I found it very hard to gain any fat what so ever. I could eat candy all day and stay fit looking. However, the answer to your question IMO is you should do a total body workout. If you are trying to remove fat from those specific areas, you will want to build muscle (not bulk) as it will raise your metabolic rate causing you to burn more calories at rest. This will reduce the fat around your stomach and thighs. And yes, diet is even more important than the workout itself. Also look into HIIT in fitBuddy. To add, the reason you want to do a full body workout is you can not spot reduce. So you would not do yourself any good focusing on one area. Besides, fitness is a lifestyle that your kids can be proud of :).
