hello, i am just a little bit(actually alotta bit) confused about my carb intake. i am a 21 yr old male, 5'10", and i weigh about 200 pounds. i want to lose body fat and i know that i am supposed to lower my carb intake. the FT nutritional planner tells me that i need to eat about 600(or some other number like that) grams of carbs but this seems really high. can someone please help me out? how low should i keep my carb intake and also, what kind of carbs should i eat daily? thank you.

The bottom line is not as much how many carbs you eat(to a point...600 gr. is too many for most), but the type of carbs and your overall caloric intake. This is where things begin. The first step is to know your maintenance calories. This is the amount of calorie intake per day with your normal activity level that will keep you exactly the same(weight wise). When you have this, then the next step would be to keep calorie levels there, but change your macro amounts to for instance a 50/30/20 p/c/f. This and making them "clean" foods(carbs from very fibrous sources are your best bet, lean proteins, and healthy fats..EFA's) will result in a nice start. Then when the losses stop, start a sensible caloric deficit such as 250 calories per day, and let that weight loss begin. Keep proceeding in this manner. It becomes key to have a nutrient dense diet. Losing or gaining weight is really the easy part. Simply adjusting your portion sizes, caloric intake up or down will result in this. The problem then becomes a nutritious diet that you can live with.

Do not get too caught up in the low carb craze. This in itself will not give you the desired results, just as the low fat diet didn't. Any diet is just that, it is short term and will have rebound effects if you cannot stay with it. A lifestlye change is in order, a diet that you can live on from now on, not just for a short period of time.

check out bbfits grocery list on fitbuddy search it and he is amazing. You need to start with little rules of life and stick to them- not necessarily these but quite like...
1)Always eat breakfast-make it wholegrain/oats/semi skimmed
2)Eat 6 small meals a day balanced to add up each day to 2500 calories of which 70g protein, 60g fat, 330g carbs
3)if i don't lose a pound in a week then cut my daily calories by 200 makeing it 2300 daily
4)jog 2 miles 3 mornings after breakfast- upgrade monthly..
5)eat 5 fruits/vegetables daily
6)eat sweet potatoes instead of potato once a week
7)snack on celery/nuts/seeds and not salted ones either..

with your own rules and your set pattern then you will succeed. but you must have rules, a real goal or two like lode 2 pound a week- run an extra 1/2 mile a week etc...

shouldn't i be eating i gram of protein per pound of body weight? that would be about 200 grams per day.
