In which ways is training with a wide leg separation different from the normal leg separation while squatting?
(is one better for overall strength, different muscles targeted, etc...)

wide leg is called sumo squats for obvious reasons. There's also a sumo deadlift as well. Wider stance makes the range shorter, and easy howeverputs more stress on the aductors and abductors of the legs and outer quads. Also on sumo style, you have to learn forward quite a bit more, so your lower back will have to be stronger.

Legs in close for a nice leg sweep all bodybuilders desire. Heels on a small platform will add to the work. YOu will most definitely not be able to do as much as wide stance.

My advice is to do a little bit of everything for the best results. You can get great legs from doing one thing, but the real results come from varying.

bb1fit, how close should they be for that nice leg sweep?
And , should I vary my leg stance in the same workout?

Less than shoulder width apart is optimal for that.

And yes, feel free to vary your stance during your leg workout.
