I know this is an old thread, maybe one of you kind folks will read my question and comment on it...

Anyway, I used the Elias calc yesterday, and for me (38 year old, not so active, 210 lb. male) to lose 2 lbs. per week, I would need to be at 1451 calories per day. The FT calc says I should be at 3,000-something!!! Of course, the FT calc doesn't take into consideration that 2 lbs. per week is my goal. Would a "happy medium" be acceptable?
Thanks for reading!

Hi ts.....FT cal intake is always very high!!!!!but 1451 is way to low...I eat more than that...I'm 140.

Cut your calories slowly until you start to see the weight dropping to 1-2lbs per week...stay away from processed foods...keep your protein and high fiber vegatables high...stick with complex carbs...but dont go crazy...

Here's the caloric calculator I used . I got it from a book so it might seem long, but I'd like to know if it seems to be accurate for some of you all.
A. Your weight in lbs
B. multiply A by 11 to get your resting metabolic rate
C. multiply B by X*** to estimate your caloric expenditure through basic daily activities ( X value at bottom of post)
D. Multiply the number of minutes you lift weights per week by 5
E. multiply the number of minutes per week that you run, cycle, or play sports by 8
F. Add line D and E, and divide by 7
G. Add C and line F to get you daily caloric needs
H. Subtract 1000 from line G to get your your daily calorie needs to lose 2 lbs of fat per week.

*** X= Very light=1.3 Light=1.6 Moderate=1.7 havey=2.1

After doing the calculations for myself it has me at 2134 to lose 2 lbs a week. To gain 1 lb a week it puts me at 3634 calories. These numbers seem good to me :)

ts, just as with any calculators, it'll probably need adjusting. Just remember that 1lb=3500 calories. So you can adjust accordingly. And also remember that you need to make sure those are quality calories. If your consuming a large amount of fats then it won't matter how close you get to your target calories.

I'm sorry, Conan. You lost me. What do you mean by 1 lb = 3500 calories? And yes, I have been paying close attention to the fat. My fat intake has dropped dramatically. I so far have lost 12 lbs since January 1. The first 9 wasn't too hard, the last 3 have been a pain!

To lose one lb of body weight it takes 3500 calories, so that's why you are cutting your maintainence caloric intake by 1000 calories/day. (1,000 x 7=7000. 3500 (for 1lb weight loss) X 2=7,000)

Don't worry about the drop-off in weight loss, that is natural!! You really shouldn't try to lose more than 2 lbs/week as you risk losing muscle in the process!!

Eventually as you lose weight you'll have to redo the calculation to keep current with your weight situation :)
