There are around 22 amino acids. All but8 of them are produced naturaly by our bodies. The balance have to be digested through foods that we eat.
In order for our bodies to complete the protein, we must have the proper balance of aminos. These are the essential amino acids.
I am pretty neutral on consumong extra, if your diet is ok.

Supplemental amino acids may help improve the amino acid profile of your whole foods. This is the reason it was suggested by your trainer to supplement with them. They can be especially useful if you eat alot of processed foods for instance. If you are eating a quality diet, and taking whey protein(which is loaded), and if you are trying to gain, then they may well be not needed. They can be of substantial help, especially BCAA's if you are dieting hard(calorie deficit).
