I really enjoy eating frozen blueberries. I noticed they weren't too calorie dense, but do have quite a bit of sugar. What are your guys opinion on blueberries???

This is a post from bb1... I did a quick search in Fit Buddy and found this...
t All foods have a place in a balanced diet. But strawberries offer a huge nutritional kick. Fruits in general are not good sources of pantothenic acid-but the strawberry is one ot the 2 major exceptions, along with the avocado. Sure, strawberries provide vitamin C. But they're also packed with folate, potassium, antioxidants-specifically ellagic acid and anthocyanins-and fiber. All 40 strawberry species promote heart health and lower cancer risk. They help combat rheumatoid arthritis and memory loss. A Nutriton and Health Research Center study found strawberies lower systolic blod pressure readings-thats the first number in your reading. And strawberries are low in calories. Foods high in nutrients but low in calories are considered nutrient dense. According to sources such as the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, the kiwi and blueberry may be the most nutrient dense fruits, but the strawberry is a serious contender. Strawberries, with the sixth highest antioxidant concentration of any fruit or vegetable, place third in actual chemical efectiveness in preventing oxidation in cells. Here's another from bb1:
t There are certain foods that are particularly helpful to looking younger, such as blueberries. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants that have anti-aging effects. Most fruits and especially vegetables contain antioxidants, but blueberries have been ranked #1 in antioxidant activity by the USDA when compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables. -------------- t I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self. - Aristotle You have the power to change a life right in your own hands. - Paul Brandt |

Benefits of Blueberries
July is National Blueberry Month Blueberries prove that good things can come in small packages. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, blueberries top the list of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and are also a rich source of dietary fiber. Several studies have found that the antioxidants in blueberries may aid in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and urinary tract infections. Enjoy blueberries in Phase 2 of The South Beach DietT - 3/4 of a cup is equal to one serving. Buying Most domestic blueberries are cultivated instead of wild. They're typically available between the months of May and September, though you may be able to purchase imported blueberries during the rest of the year. When buying fresh berries, look for those that are deep blue with a chalky white appearance. They should move freely in their container. Avoid mushy berries or stained containers. Storing Blueberries will last in the refrigerator for seven to 10 days. Make sure to remove any crushed or moldy berries before storing, and never wash your berries before you are ready to eat them. You can also keep blueberries frozen for up to 10 months. Eating Starting in Phase 2, blueberries can be enjoyed on their own or as a topping for fat-free yogurt or whole-grain cereals. Wash your berries first and pick through them to remove any stems or unripened berries. Blueberries can also be tossed into salads or added to South Beach DietT-friendly baked goods. |
