The student fitness center is finally opening on Saturday and I intend to be there when it happens. I've redone my fitness plan on FT to include machines and stuff and plan to print it out and take it with me.

Here's the problem; I'm completely clueless as to what I'm supposed to do once I arrive at this fabulous new facility. I don't know anything about the machines or even what's available. I'm assuming it will all be state of the art stuff since it's brand new. I called and they said there are machines, free weights and a walking track. As soon as I find the bulletin board I'm going to advertise for a personal trainer but until I get one, what do I do?

Morning anni!

Will there be any staff there who can show you about the place, and how to use the machines?

It may be that you have to treat the first day as a reconnaisance mission, rather than a full workout day, to find out what machines you've got available.

You know you can get full instructions for the individual exercises and print them out?

Morning Princess!

I don't know if there will be any staff or not, I suspect they may have people the first few days and that's what I'm hoping. Once I see what kinds of machines are available I thought I would print out the information on FT and add it to my notebook that I will take with me. If there aren't staff available I'm just going to have to ask whoever is around and hope they know what they are doing. I'm very nervous about the whole thing but I've waited a long time and I AM going to do it.

A lot of places in the UK won't let you use the gym until you've had an induction, incase you injure yourself and sue them. I don't know if it's the same in the US or not.

I found the instructions for the exercises on FT really helpful, I used to take a folder full of printouts to the gym with me.

Good luck and don't be nervous :)

I have had 3 different gym memberships, all 3 gyms did offer a free orientation of all equipment if necessary. In fact the one I am at now, makes it mandatory like princess stated. Hopefully you should have no problem getting someone to show you the ropes :dumbbell: Good Luck!!!!

Anni, any reputable gym whether it be in a Colledge, High school, or private, will have a floor person on duty. Don't worry, some one will walk you through your program, but like Princess said, don't expect too much on the first day. It will probably be packed anyway.
Good luck to you.

Anni, also some of the machines should have instructions posted somewhere on the machine, I know its not a live person, but it can help you have a better understanding of what to do.

Anni I'm sure you know that you can double click on an exercise in your FT routine and a description with a moving gif picture pops up. My wife found studying the gifs and printing the description helped her alot. You can print it all and take it with you right down to the stretches.

The machines may be a little different than the ones in the pictures but you'll get it. Keaper's exactly right in that especially with new equipment there will probably be illustrations right on the machine.

You'll do just fine.

as has been said above most gyms (from your YMCA to the top gyms) will give you some sort of induction on to the best practice for the machines/weights. i would assume its pracically mandatory for health and safety reasons. i would also assume that the machines will have directions for use printed on them and possibly the muscle groups worked. you'll probably find your first day is a kind of introduction day - seeing what the machines can do for you. enjoy and good luck.

Thanks you guys! I'm really so excited but terribly nervous about going. I've waited almost a year for this opportunity and I really appreciate all the support.
