I have never purchased a suppliment before other than the occasional bar when on the run, and was thinking of buying some powder so my husband and I can get some extra protien and calories into our diets. We are on a very very tight budget, so is there something I can buy at the regular grocery store that is fairly inexpensive that will give us those two benifits until we can afford something with more quality?

Cristal, you can buy whey for post workout or other kinds for supplements at other times. A lot of women like soy but i've read here that it isn't as popular for men.
The best way to compare price and quality is online. The supplement sponser here at FT is well labled and well thought of. You want a protein that is 25 to 30 g per scoop. You can get higher or lower carb content per your needs. Casein is good at night but you can feed him cottage cheese and nuts instead for a late evening snack.
He can make a shake from eggwhites and milk with unsweetened cocoa and splenda with oatmeal for breakfast if you dont want to buy powders. Take a look in the mael replacement sections of websights that sell supplements. The labels should clearly state the contents.
High quality doesn't necessarily mean expensive. If the p/f/c is equal then the difference is flavoring. Some of the stuff we have bought over the years tastes like crap to me but my wife loved it and vice versa.
