should be fine however if you are just 14 it may be wise too leave weight training till you are about 15 -16, i dot think supplements should be nessesary unless you are doing really hard weight training anyway food on its own should be fine

You can workout at 14 just don't lift real heavy i wouldn't let your reps go below 10, protein shakes are fine it's just protein like chicken you eat and alot of other things its just a different form. Good Luck

good GOD! no it's not ok! 14? just eat whole foods my man!
protein shakes have synthetic versions of many naturally occuring elements and can cause allergic like reactions. they are only reccommended for ATHLETES and individuals who really don't care what they're putting into their body. no offense. whey protein is considered a WASTE PRODUCT by the dairy industry! if an industry who makes a nutritionally devoid product like milk says that whey is a waste product....you do the math. in alot of shakes, they use soy protein as well. soy protein is an estrogen mimicker...so in other words, as far as your body is concerned....you just took a dose of estrogens! at 14 years old!! this is the absolute last thing a 14 year old boy....or girl for that matter wants in their system. everyone who disagrees with any of this....bring it on! there is too much information out there about this stuff for me to just sit back and say nothing. i'll leave you with this....."mother nature knows best and when we try to outsmart her....we pay the consequences" -------------- All of the information I present is not my own...many before me have paved the road to teaching ultimate health and vitality. special thanks to paul chek and the chek institute. |

No, notbuffenough, on't think that at the age of 14 do you really need to be using supplements of any type, including protein shakes. At your age, just EAT.
However, in regards to nellyboy's remarks, I take some exception: If you are talking about proteins, then a normal protein shake does not use synthetic versions. Eggs and milk are naturally occuring, and, generally speaking, that's what is used, as you state in the paragraph that followed. Along with that, milk is hardly a nutrionally devoid product: a great source of calcium, vitmains A and D, 80% casein, 20% whey, with a decently high BVP. Continuing with that, whey is a by-product of making such dairy products as cheese, and is found on the top of non-stirred yogurt. However, its tremendously beneficial health value is now realized. With its many fractions of aminos, and high assimilation rate, whey is used to help grow and maintain tissue in many treatment facilities for cases such as severe burn victims and AIDS patients. Hardly a waste. Soy protein is not a nonylphenol, therefore, it is not an estrogen mimicker. What its flavones have been discovered to help with is scavage for free radicals, as well as help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain kinds of cancer (actually FDA approved for this). It does help women utilize their estrogen more efficiently, and there have been a few studies that show that it may lower a man's level of Testosterone, but it does not add estrogens to the system (you'll need a prescrption for that). Other than that, I agree with you: get your nutrition first and foremost from whole food. Plus, it tastes a lot better! -------------- Michael Trample the weak; hurdle the dead! Nellyboy, your comments on athletes who use protein shakes because they don't care what they put in their body is completely ridiculous. I'll put my diet and eating habits along with my workout regime against yours any day. I also use protein shakes and will reccomend them any time to anyone who works out and creates a demand for extra protein. but i do agree that at 14 that he should just eat good whole foods but a protein shake would not hurt. I feel that you came out with blazing guns nellyboy, especially when almost all of the members on here take protein shakes and reccomend them. They are imparitive PWO, whey isolate protein is the quickest diegesting protein which is vital after a workout. Your body cannot digest whole foods such as chicken or steak as quickly, I still have yet to see an advisory on a tub of protein that states an age at which it is safe to take protein shakes.

Also a little curious where you got the info on soy protein being an estrogen mimicker?

I can agree with the whey from "Pasturized milk" but have to disagree when it comes to 100% pure whey from cheese, goats milk, etc.

health and sports don't usually go together at the competitive level. not much of anything a comptetive sport does to the human body can be considered "healthful". what is the average lifespan of a former nfl football player, a ex-professional boxer, etc. how about muscloskeletal issues: how many professional baseball pitchers have NOT had an issue with their shoulders, hips, elbows, etc. or how about body-builders....is there anything that a PROFESSIONAL body builder does, for the most part anyway, that can be considered healthy?
competititve sports are some of the most physiologically stressing activities known to man...there's been studies published on nfl players that state that every single game an nfl player goes through could be compared to getting into a major car accident.....and this happens every week for 17+ weeks (practices and pre season could be included). one of these days i'm going to investigate the average lifespan of a powerlifter....haven't read any at this point, because it'd be interesting to find out exactly what i'm doing to myself. LOL although....what is the average span of a couch potato? LOL...probably pretty similar to that of an underwater welder! oh well...as they say...everything causes cancer and ultimately death...so why not look and perform great until then eh? LOL note: most of what i'm saying here is to be taken lightly. |

I didn't know we were talking professional here i was more on the level of just your avergae joe or someone in grade school up to college. Anything you do is going to have an adverse effect. Those football players are also not getting paid what the rest of us are, granted it's not good to get pounded like that week in and week out but i know i would love to be paid millions to play the sport I loved and be admired by millions of people. You can really see it on boxers how getting pounded in the head for 12-15 rounds can really mess you up people like ali and riddick bowe(sp?) But I don't think you can relate the pros to the ameture. It really does seem like everything anyone does these days could lead to cancer, so why not just live life the way you want.

I drank some whey at 15....not that big a deal, if he has adverse effects to it, then don't take it. I don't see how it would hurt. -------------- GO into battle as if was your last, cause thats the only one you loose! |
