Last night was my first day of weights on my Ft program and I have to say it didn’t go quite as well as I had hoped.
Since Thursday I’ve been doing lots of cardio and I’ve actually been really enjoying it…especially the great feeling afterwards. I’m up to 40 minutes and I was actually enjoying going into the gym.
Well, I’ve never really done weights before so I printed off all the “precise exercise executions” from this website and put them into a binder and went to the gym (OMG – am I a gym geek? HAHAHA).
I started off with the Wide Grip Machine Pulldowns that went pretty well. I used 70 weight but now I’m not sure if that was lbs or kilos. The One Arm Dumbell Rows went ok too and I used 20 (not sure lbs or kilos). But I ran into problems when I got to my 3rd exercise which was the Machine Incline Presses. Those were sooooo hard. I put 5 (I think pounds) on each side and I could barely do it so I went down to 2.5 on each side and still had trouble. I couldn’t believe I was having so much trouble with only 5 pounds total – that bar must be pretty heavy! Also it was weird that I was having so much trouble considering I was doing 20 just on the exercise before, which makes me think that some of the weights are in lbs and some are in kilos.
I also had trouble with the Seated Machine Flyes, but the problem with that was the machine I was using wasn’t the same as the one in the picture from the “precise exercise executions”. In the picture the guy has his arms stretched out all the way (like he is flying) but on the machine I was using my arms were bent at the elbow, like an “L”. I started with 50 weight but had to go down to 30 and then gave up.
And the areas that I was feeling pain weren’t necessarily the “primary muscles”. So I’m thinking that maybe I was doing something wrong? But I tried to follow it pretty close. So I’m feeling a little deflated this morning. I am sore, which I think is a good sign, and I guess it will just take practice and patience, eh?
I’m looking forward to my rest days (today and tomorrow) and just doing cardio.

I usually find my first day of a new weights program is a pretty hit or miss affair, until I work out what sort of weights I should be lfiting.
You could ask someone at the gym what units the weights are in, but I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you use the same machines, and try to slowly increase how much you are lfiting The actual figures are less important.
I used to find incline presses really tough, I think because the shoulders are involved and they fatigue really easily.
I am sure next time will be better :)

What gym do you go to and where are you located. All the gyms I have been in here in the states use lbs with out much exception. That said on the machine presses I am confused, you used a machine witha weight stack? Or did you use a barbell? Most standard barbells weeigh 45lbs. Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I’m just a little disappointed in myself that it didn’t go smoother. But I think as I get used to the machines and start to feel more confident in what I’m doing it will go better.
I’m in Vancouver BC and I’m working out at the Y downtown.
On the machine incline presses I was using a barbell and adding weights to the end. Thanks 7707mutt, actually you answered my question – I didn’t realize the bar was so heavy (45lbs). No wonder I was having trouble – I couldn’t figure out why I was having so much problems with only 5 pounds of weight…but now I realize it was actually 50, so I don’t feel so bad. Knowing that, I think all the weights are in pounds and not kilos.
