It is very high in protein, and also calories. I believe 1 cup is over 400 calories, but something extrodinary in protein like 50 gr. or so. Fat content of around 10-12 gr. You are right, it tastes great...too much would be an amount that does not fit into your calorie needs.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

It consists of chick peas, sesamee paste and oil. All healthy, but high calorie.-------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

i love the color of it. perhaps one day i will paint a room "hummus." of course then i would be tempted to eat the walls.
so here's another question - what about the pita bread that typically comes with the hummus? i know it probably depends on your available calories, but i've been struggling to get to even 1500 cals lately (my calories to LOSE are 2400, i'm bad, i know.) this all sounds stupid coming from me i'm sure, but food has been freaking me out lately and i need to hear that what i'm putting in my body is safe if i eat the right amount. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

There is whole wheat pita bread.
I like hummus as a veggie dip, celery and cauliflower and broccoli are good with it. Pita bread is 'safe' just refined more than whole grain bread. Try to find the wheat or try spreading your hummus on a crispbread like Wasa crisp (my favorite) -------------- "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." We have a Haggan's store by my mom's house, and they have the best garlic hummus, and homemade pita chips, If i had the money to spend, I would buy this stuff all the time.

I absolutely LOVE hummus too. But since it does contain a lot of oil and sesame paste, I decided to make my own hummus and add neither. Instead, I substiute the fattening stuff with yogurt, still has the creamy texture and tastes excellent!! You should give it a try sometime.:)

we're talking about a cup of hummus - your serving size is probably a tablespoon. 16 tablespoons is 1 cup. 16 x 50 cal/serving = 800 calories in 1 cup of hummus. the hummus i eat has 35 cal/serving and 3g/protein, so i get 280 calories and 24g protein (16 x 3) when i eat 1/2 a cup.
i buy traditional hummus from one of the two whole foods stores by my house. the ingredients are chickpeas (a.k.a. garbanzo beans), tahini (a.k.a. sesame paste), garlic, onion, lemon, sea salt, and one of the two places i buy from includes olive oil, which is usually a standard in hummus. i, for one, need the extra fats, so i prefer the variety with olive oil. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

It is very easy to make your own - and possibly cheaper, cristalbelle.
1 can garbanzo (chickpeas) beans onion and garlic - saute in olive oil til soft sesame paste (expensive for jar, but lasts forever), about a tablespoon a little salt or tamari soysauce. lemon juice to taste drain the beans, saute the garlic and onions, throw it all in a food processor and voila - humus! TYou can play with the seasonings, I have made it with chicken broth instead of olive oil, too. Not as good, but less fat, if that is your concern... -------------- "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." Marcel Proust |

You know now that i know whats in it i think i may give it a shot especially if i make it myself. It just didn't look to appealing to me but i love garbonzo beans and i have a bag of em as well, don't they take a while to cook? Saute means to throw them in a pan and cook them till there slighty brown right...hehehe? Do you mean a whole onion and a few cloves of garlic?

a whole onion might be too much, unless you just really like onion. i'd probably stick with around 1/4 cup, depending on how much you're making.
p.s. i ate hummus for part of my dinner saturday night and it was delightful. i will be having it for lunch today. mmmm. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |
