What kind of exercises should a person use to really add thickness to the back?

Bent over barbell rows... deadlifts.. and maybe some t-bar rows would help.. Did you look at any of the exercises in the back muscle targeting section? If not try and check out those few I mentioned.. mostly I see people saying that bent over barbell rows work best... there should be some of those and dumbell rows along with plenty of deadlifts in your program already though if your on the mass program...

starting off back workouts with either heavy (but good form) wide grip pull downs and then going to t-bar or bent over rows are an excellent combo, I find. Or you can mix it up and start with bent over rows and then go to wide grip pull downs or pull ups. Wide grip pull ups are excellent. Even if you can't do that many, get a spot and try them out. Good luck!

Wide grip over hand pull ups (on that machine that counters your weight so you can bang on a bunch of reps) will work your back BIG TIME! Also dumbell single arm rows works wonders if performed correctly! Good LUCk!

I've said this before; it's actually a question of where you place your hands. Grip close together, you're concentrating more about the thickness of the back. Hands wide apart, and you'll be working on getting your back wider.
Of course you need the both, but it's still a good thing to know. Good luck.
