Hey guys. I just finished my first week of the program here and I’ve got a question. On Thursday I did my shoulders, biceps and triceps. And now 3 days later my arms are killing me. I mean the muscles are incredibly sore, especially when I straighten my arms. And as strange as it sounds, it actually helps to have someone pull my arms and stretch the muscle. I bought some Rub A5-35 and I’m also taking some Excedrin.

I’m thinking that maybe I over did it.

I know that there is supposed to be some pain with weight training, but even after 3 days? Is this normal? Has anybody else had this? And finally, does anyone have any suggestions on how to ease the pain?

Thanks!

It's absolutely normal to feel extremely sore when starting fresh in the weight room after a good time off. The reason your still sore or keep getting sore is DOMS)Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) The pain should start to fade a bit on day 4. The soreness will get less and less the more you workout but still expect some soreness for a little while longer. ENjoy it I love getting sore makes me feel good about a workout but being sore is not an indicator of a good or bad workout. Try working the muscles lightly a few days after if your really sore active recovery is the best as it will get blood flowing thru the muscles and helping get rid of lactic acid which is what's making you feel sore. Get some rest and keep taking excedrin to help with the pain

hey freddiemarsh I had the same thing my first week bicep workout, it killed to bend my arms but by the time it came to work them again (7 days) they were right as rain, I made sure I stretched them often which helped loads. As Justin said, they gradually got better and better, and I kinda liked it as well, made me feel like I was working them to their max :)

You may want to do some reading on lactic acid buildup, also. http://www.herbalremedies.com/lacticacid.html

It isn't necessarily necessary to feel terrible pain, tightness and burn, a warm up and a cool down are said to help alleviate some of the symptoms. Some "discomfort" is part of the process, afterall you are tearing and rebuilding muscle, but pain to an extent as you described seems a bit unnecessary. The program gives a suggested starting point, it is up to us to determine if we are "comfortable" with the amount of reps, weight, etc. as we are all different and come into this with a variety of muscle conditioning.
