Hi everyone
I have a question in regards to hair loss. I have always had pretty thick long hair and lately I have been loosing it by the handful. I heard that stress can result in this, but how can one prevent any further loss? I tried something called Nioxcin(?) recommended by my stylist, but I don't seem to be seeing any improvement. Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks |

Are you, or have you recently started, changed, or discontinued taking any medication?-------------- Anni ******* Hard work must have killed somebody |

Hi Lana, no answers but good to see you on the boards again. Don't be so scarce. I'll still like you if you're bald.-------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

Hi Charlie and Annie :) Not bald yet. I'll apply some glue to my head and rub a shedding cat on it before that happens.
No new medication. Just protein powder and vitamins. ...There appeared some nasty little grays that I did not wish to allow on my head, so I blasted them with colour a few years back and have continued. Could colouring ones hair cause this? I know plenty of women who colour and no loss there? |

I wasn't making light. My wife has shed locks for years and I can't tell it. She is aware of it but quit worrying because although the shower drain says massive disaster her head doesn't bear this out. -------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

Well, I was making light. It's my nature. Be sure to run the cat through the automated cat-washer first.-------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

Do you wear it in a ponytail a lot? That can cause a TON of hair loss if the ponytail is too tight. Is it coming off at the root, or breaking off farther down the shaft? I have heard that an imbalance in your vitamin intake can cause this, but so can a lot of other things. I deffinately think we should get Julieanne's professional opinion on this one.

I've been looking up female hair loss and it would seem that there are many factors, which could result in hair loss, such as hormones, Childbirth, thyroid disease, deficient diet and the immune system. I would go to your doctor and seek professional advice. I've also heard that colouring your hair a lot can make it go thiner. My sister coloured her hair a lot and it went very thin.

Thanks for all your help everyone. Cristalbelle - I dont wear a ponytail - the hairs break easily and at come out from the root. I think I will bring it up to the doctor next time I visit - can't hurt and might help :)

I just wanted to give you a little more information that should relax you. My hair stylist told me once before that it is actually very natual to "shed". It is quite possible to lose up to 100 strands a day! Don't worry about coloring your hair, mine has been bleached to the max on numerous occasions and it is still all in tact. I think you should only start to worry if you develop bald spots on your head. This would definitely be due to stress.
Hope my input makes you feel better. :) |

Hey Lana, sorry it has taken me a while to get to this. (Hector didn't tell me and I am just now getting to playing catch up with FT :-)
The first thing you need to do is establish if the hair is coming from the root or if it is breakage. The way you can tell is to brush your hair and then pull a strand of hair out of the brush. Look for a very small, white-ish, bulb like tip on either end of the hair. If there is one, you are loosing the hair from the root, it not, it is most likely breakage. Check a few of the strands to see if this is consistant. Let me know what you find and we'll go from there, ok? -------------- Julienne A morning without coffee is like something without something else. |

Thanks gette and Julienne
Julienne: Mostly from the root. Definitely there are some caused from breakage, but the majority is from the root. I feel like a moulting bird.... Thanks for your input :) |

Well, there could be many reasons. I would look first at your diet and supplementation. Anything different? Change in birth control? Are you loosing weight rapidly? The thyroid, when even slightly out of balance, can cause big changes in the growth cycles of the hair.
Yes, it could also be a shedding period for you. Your designer is right in that a person usually looses 100-150 hairs a day...even if you don't see them. But I would think that if it has just become a concern, that there is a little more going on here. From looking at your profile, it would be a good guess that this could part of the normal process involved after you have a baby. Most assume that the high volume of shedding you have right after giving birth is all there is to it, but in reality, it takes a little over three years for the hair cycles to get completely back to normal. Sometimes, it never does. Shocking, right? It's true. Most of the time, women don't notice it much as it is such a long and spread out time frame, but I can assure you, it is a fact. As to what you can do about it...well, the Nioxin is a fabulous product line, though I believe it is a little more on the "preventitive" side of hair loss. There website has a lot of information: www.nioxin.com I would also incorporate a prenatal vitamin back into your supplements. Get the ones that are low in iron...the Spring Valley ones from Wal Mart, when taken before bed are great for not hurting the stomach or constipating you. (sorry, TMI) Let me know if I have been too vague or if you have more concerns. I will do what I can to help! -------------- Julienne A morning without coffee is like something without something else. |

Some loss is normal - longer hair you tend to see more of it but if it is alot then go to the doctor soon & stress could be the problem so try to relax as much as possible-------------- Reddy All people smile in the same language |
