I have been doing squats and noticed that I really don't feel the burn or soreness in my butt and hamstrings when I do them. I really feel them in the front of my thighs though. Is this right? Am I doing them properly. I think I have good form but possibly I am doing them incorrectly. I am using a smith machine to do them.

the reason you're not feeling them all over and only in your front thighs is because you are using a smith machine. with a smith, one tends to lean into the bar, instead of putting the weight over the center of the body. if you want a good squat workout, use freeweights, and start out with little or no weight until you get PERFECT form, then move up. when done correctly, you will see gains all over like you wont believe.
hope that helps....

I'm with Michael on this one. With free weights, you can stick your butt out "more naturally" at the bottom of the movement which puts more stress on the hams and glutes.
Of course, my problem is getting the darn weights off the floor, over my head and onto my traps...this is rather difficult when going heavy.

Yes great info from the guys. Also use your head.... THINK about pushing with your heels and don't ever put the weight on your front feet.

Great, thanks everybody. I am thinking that should do the trick as well. I will start with low weight to make sure that I have proper form and go from there.
