hi guys...

i was rather excited because i finally found glutamine over here in powder (i'm overseas and its hard to find things like that) so i posted it on the board i usually hang out on and i got some good advice.

someone brought this up... and i was wondering what you all thought..

" taking a single amino acid supplement is unneccessary and, in fact, dangerous. Your body is not designed to handle supplements, it is designed to metabolize FOOD. The amino acid receptors in your body can be flooded by the supplemented amino acid and potentially BLOCK other amino acids from being absorbed. *cough* Deficiency *cough*. As well, excess protein from the diet is stored as FAT. It won't make muscle because protein doesn't make muscle. Muscle makes muscle. The RDA for protein generously accounts for muscle growth. To find out how much protein you need in a day, simply take your body weight (in pounds), divide it by 2.2 and multiply that number by 0.8. That will give you the number of grams of protein you need to consume each day. The RDA is slightly higher for body builders (1.5 g/kg of body weight). This amount of protein can definitely be achieved by diet alone."

i'm not really trying to gain more muscle but i'm trying to reduce soreness and gain a little strength. but are they really dangerous and unnecessary?

Some could be dangerous to your health, and some are unnesecary for specific goals, but do a search on fitbuddy and you'll find the best supplements for your goals.

amino acids are components of protein...ie building blocks of muscle...

generally speaking don't go by advice given to general population otherwise you'll be takign 40 grams of protein...eg 1 piece of chicken...

also eventhough you get amino acids from protein...different protein sources have different amino acid profiles...some are lacking in certain ones....ie incomplete proteins..etc...taking a specific amino acid like glutamine is to aid your body which needs higher number of these...during stressful times...eg after a heavy workout.....this is obviously not applicable to joe shmoe walking down the street who doesn't know what inside of a gym looks like....

it's funny when some people take a bit of truth stretch it out of proportion and then claim to be experts..

my last piece of advice is take everything with a grain of salt...and educate yourself....otherwise to paraphrase bb1....if you're ignorant on certain issues then you'll fall for anything...so beware....gl

Whoever wrote this is nuts! Geez, where do people find this stuff, and that is the bad thing about the internet. As useful a tool as it is, it allows access to morons to get on write any incredibly stupid stuff they want. And to further the problem, if it "sounds" like the guy knows what he is saying, it adopted by those few without understanding of the subject and passed on. If you do not see adequte studies and research provided with an article, take it with a grain of salt. This is laughable!:laugh:
