I had back surgery in February. This is a big reason I would like to get into shape. But when I used the training program builder or what ever it is called it asked for me to do crunches and leg lifts. When I did the crunches it was not that bad but then when I tried to do the leg lifts it would send a sharp pain to my back. My question is what other exercise can I do to target the same muscles? Or should I just keep continuing with the leg lifts even though it causes my back to hurt?:(

Don't do the leg lifts, at least until you are stronger 9but they may never be confortable for you), focus on crunches and oblique crunches and don't neglect your low back - do back extensions (lying on your stomach) and bird dogs either lying or on your hands and knees. Check fit buddy for back exercises - I know I have entered more detailed descriptions of back exercises before, as have others.

becuase you've had previous back surgery, you need to be extremely carefuly with how you go about training your core. why did you have back surgery and what type of procedure did they use? i'm not going to speculate all that much, but i'm sure there's a correlation between some dysfunction in you abdominals and your back injury. i really can't recommend any exercises at this point until i find out more info from you.
