I need an answer quick, couple friends of mine go running at the beach which some people say works out your whole lower body because you're not balanced like on concrete. Is this true? Is it better, or is running on concrete better? Let me know your opinions on this please.

Running in the sand will give your angles and calves a huge work out (and therefore you'll burn more calories). It's a good idea to do it once in a while.
(I did once a long run on the beach (in bikini!) with bare feet...... NOT a good idea. Why? No shoes and lots of hard impacts/shocks from the wet sand = veeeeery sore calves for 5 days after....)

I have heard because of the way sand gives, it will work your calves big time. I tried running on the sand a few times while on vacation, it was much harder than running on concrete IMO.

Oh man do my calves hurt! Well I went and tried to run with my friends at the beach and man did it work me. I think I'd rather run at the park..hehe. If I do run at the beach from now on, it will only be mabye once a week.

Try running on sand (7 miles) with full combat fatigues, a 70-pound pack, a rifle and boots! Did that in the Corps and it was a killer!

these days I might run a couple yards on the beach if the wind catches my umbrella, but other than that gimme a chair or towel.
Ah to be young again! Those were the days those huh Rob? I sure am glad someone is doing it.

If you are a big guy, running on sand has the advantage of acting as a shock-absorber for your knees and ankles as well. I used to be friends with Brian Socha (former center for the Miami Dolphins) who was a 350 lb beast and the only place he could run was on the beach because of his size and old injuries.
