I noticed people always ask you what you bench press, and they judge you strength by how much you bench press. Correct me if IM wrong. I really believe it should be measured by what you squatt, and by your dead lift is. In boxing stronger lower body, is more important then upper body.

I know what you mean,,,what IM trying to say is that when you do bench press, you only working your upper body,,,but when you do squats and died lifts you working your over all body...building your overall Strength. Therefore I say strength should be measured by that not bench press.

you'll see this same topic just discussed a week or so ago under the thread before this one. here is my response to the question 'how much can you bench?':
"you're all correct in some regards. yes, some of us (myself included) are obessed with strength and strength contests, and numbers matter to us alot; this is why there is a powerlifting thread (LOL). but the bench is only part of a larger picture of what "strong" is. somehow, it has become the macho numbers exercise. when people would ask me what i benched, i always said "if you want to talk numbers, let's talk about the squat..." i mean, there are only 3 ways that someone can be titled the "world's strongest man."

Depends...if you are in a powerlifting contest, you are scored on a combination score of bench press, squat, and deadlift. So it is a combination of upper and lower. I agree, the squat in normal everyday life is your trunk, and without trunk strength, the tree falls easily.

But strength also can just be measured in the arms. Or strength can just be measured on one thing and the rest could suck, but if that one thing is soooo good that it takes the rest of your bodys place then..yea
for an example...Shaq from the lakers...he CANNOT run, he CANNOT shoot from the outside worth beans, he CANNOT dribble, the list could go on and on. But yet he is one of the best basketball players in history. Why is that? It's because his strength in that one specialty he has, posting up and dunking all over them, takes up for everything. It's like it dont matter how you shoot the ball as long as it goes in..
wierd anology but...yea lol
