Previously I did 45 min of Elliptical cardio and was burning about 450 calorie I tried HIIT using the elliptical for 20 min, but I burn only 280 calories. I'm burning 200 calories less, then how come HIIT is effective then the usual cardio. May be I'm missing something Please help me out guys!!

You are missing something. HIIT is interval training. Therefore, the intensity should be higher than normal cardio. If you are only doing 20 minutes of the same routine you did for 45 minutes, then you are not doing HIIT.

Dont get to wrapped up in it; just remember to do the time and keep increasing the intensity.

That number is relative. Does not really mean you are burning exactly that amount. The thing to remember about HIIT cardio is you keep your metabolism up for a longer period of time after your cardio session is over, thus a more calorie burn in the long run. On an average pace at regular cardio, your calorie burn pretty much stops when you stop. And just use that number as a base to try to improve on. It is not an exact science.
