Just built a new home gym; now I need to get some equipment. The smith machine seems to be popular; has anyone been using it?

I have but I really do not like it. It is safe yes but it locks you into one range of motion that does not work for me.

My gym finally got another Smith machine to replace the broken one. I was happy because I'm not strong enough to do squats without it. I see a lot of guys use it for benching more weight.

it was a great invention for things such as home gyms and training without partners since it self-spots, but, personally, i was never able to use it for too much since it forced my lifts to be way too linear.

The smith is a great piece of equipment. Very versitle, don't have to worry about a spot at home! Once you get your positioning down for your different exercises, you will be fine with it. You will know exactly for example where to put the bench for declines, inclines, flat benches, squats, bb rows, etc. for optimum muscle "feel". You can pile on the weight, without worrying. You can even do partial reps like 1/4 benches to break past sticking poings. No spotter, smith is next best.
