Up until today I have been eating white bread instead of the whole wheat. I decided while getting groceries to take everyones advice and go with whole wheat. I was comparing labels and EVERY brand the store carries has high fructose corn syrup. Since this is the case what makes it so much of a better choice than white bread? Isn't high fructose corn syrup one of the biggest reasons to avoid soda pop?
Thanks in advance

Your right. You have to find the ones that are made naturally like at home. Try a bakery, and also watch out for molasses, some places use it for color.

Look for the first words in the ingredients...if it "enriched any kind of flour, even wheat", it is not truly wheat bread. Enriched means they removed the bran from the wheat for processing, and "added" useless stuff to try to make it better. But it is basically white bread.

for a real 100% whole wheat it should say in the ingredients "stone ground whole wheat flour." This is how you know you are getting the real deal. And just because it says sandwich wheat does not mean a thing. Take five seconds to flip the packaging upside down. Usually it will cost you a few more cents but if you go to a bread store, you can get some great deals! Good luck! And by the way...it tastes MUCH better too!

I'm telling you, reading the packages on everything you buy is enlightening! If you aren't sure what something means, post on FT and most likely one of the experts here will clue you in! I changed MUCH of my purchases not just for me but for my family also!

Isn't white flour just whole wheat flour thats had all of its nutrional value bleached out of it?

Uh, yeah. That would be why whole wheat flour is better for you....

Thats what I thought. One question has always racked my mind on this subject.

Why is it that whole wheat bread is typically more expensive (the same with brown rice and whole wheat pasta)?

Wouldn't the process of removing the nutrients from the bread have higher manufacturing cost then if they just left the flour alone?

I am not sure about this issue at all but what you say makes sense. I have noticed though that you have to pay to be healthy. Generally speaking the healthy alternatives are more expensive. Maybe they make the white bread cheaper because they know that people like the taste of it better and will buy it more often than wheat bread, even though white bread is unhealthy for them.

That and since the whole wheat bread does not have any preservatives in it it will not last as long as white bread. So they have more waste in wheat bread than white, so they have to charge more.

When they refine the flour and sugars, and other products, the manufacturers of the products sell the by products, therefore making even higher profits than from the unrefined products alone.
Another good example is coffee. When the cafein is extracted, the processors sell the cafeen to manufactures who put it in thier products. IE.. Coke.

I think "Roman Meal" is about as close to the real deal as you can get in the store. It seems pretty healthy.

I find the health food stores the best source for breads. I agree with the above posts. READ THE LABELS. And yes it costs to be healthy. The mass market is geared towards crap because people want it and have been brainwashed to want it. I don't know how people do it sometimes. When I was young I was in poverty and never could afford good food and supplements? forget that. Of course I became fat and unhealthy.

I scored some Sarah Lee at the local grocery and the first ingredient listed is stone ground wheat followed by some other wholesome goodies. It still has fructose in it but its bound to be better than the white bread I have been eating for the past 3 decades!

As far as major chain store brands, one of the better ones you can go with is Brownberry. They make decent breads. This is the brand I normally buy when I forget to get some at the health food store. I particularly like the Health Nut bread...it has a bit of HFCS, but not much. Great as toast.

Have you ever heard of Ezekial Bread? It is made with bean sprouts and such. It is available here on the east coast at our local health food store. Unfortunately the only other bread they carry is fresh baked and for some reason it does not have a complete list of ingredients.

Yep, good stuff. I buy that and other sprouted grain breads all the time at the health food store. You will find them in the freezer area.

I knew it must be healthy because it sure tastes FUNKY!
Seriously though, I guess I will go back to using it but I am not looking forward to that week or so of getting used to the taste again.
