In my endurance, carb mix drink there are ten grams of glycerol. What exactly does this do?

It is a clear liquid that is sweet tasting, it is refined from olive oil.

In the food industry, glycerol is an important moistening agent for baked goods. It is also added to candies and icings to prevent crystallization. Glycerol is used as a solvent for food colors and carrier for extracts and flavouring agents. The smoothness of lotions, creams and toothpaste is due to the presence of glycerol.

So pretty much the only reason that it is in these drinks is to prevent the malodextrin, sucrose, etc. from crystalizing?

Thats it. And if you do an experiment and leave some good quality red wine in a class or in the bottle, you will see the sugars crystalizing on the bottom because of the absence of Glycerol.

Glycerol's ability to draw water into the vascular system is of primary interest to endurance athletes of all kinds as well as bodybuilders. As a result of this action, Glycerol may help prevent dehydration, boost muscular performance, pull unwanted water out from under the skin (creating more cuts), and dramatically enhance muscle vascularity.
Because of this, Glycerol has become a very popular pre-contest supplement for endurance athletes like marathoners, cyclists and triathletes, as well as with bodybuilders because of Glycerol's ability to enhance vascularity and cuts.

Carivan, ever use it? We have used it backstage before contests.

I've never used it, but sounds like I might use it in the challenge this year. Thats if I do the challenge.

It's great for helping prevent dehydration. When I used to pit crew for a pro off-road racing team, we would give the drivers little packets of goo which contained glycerol, among other things (like carbs, Vit Bs, protein) to help with handling the extreme desert heat. Worked pretty damn well...
